Russian army UAVs do not meet the requirements – Russian MoD

MOSCOW ($1=58.75 Russian Rubles) — The Russian Federation has officially admitted that the drones produced in Russia do not meet the tactical and technical requirements of the Ministry of Defense. The same applies to manufacturers who cannot meet the Kremlin’s requirements. Colonel Igor Ischuk stated this during the round table “Prospects for the development of technologies for unmanned vehicles in the Russian Federation.” Colonel Ischuk is a senior official in the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Colonel Ischuk expressed a rather critical opinion, based on the results of the war with Ukraine. According to Ischuk, the main problem is the non-fulfillment of the element base. Ischuk said that the Ministry of Defense is currently forced to simplify the design of Russian unmanned aerial vehicles.

Ischuk opined that Russia needs drones primarily for electronic intelligence. Russia does not have, but needs, drones with an anti-jamming navigation receiver, Ischuk said, adding that all these requirements must be affordable.

“These aircraft, of course, must be equipped with radiation warning systems, friend or foe systems, they must be easy to control,” said a representative of the Russian Defense Ministry.

During the roundtable meeting, the suggestion that Ukraine was using “false targets” or “dummy systems” to trick Russian drones into attacking was confirmed. This is a problem, Valery Trushnin said, because the Russian position is revealed. Valery Trushnin is an editor at the Russian online publication Izvestia.

Russia is actively using its drones more to hide artillery strikes than direct attacks. This is made clear by the footage released by the Russian Ministry of Defense, which shows just such an interaction.

Unlike Russia, Ukraine actively uses not only military-donated drones but also civilian drones, turning them into charge carriers. On social media in recent months, hundreds of videos shared by profiles following the war in Ukraine show the release of a grenade, or bomb, on a Russian armored vehicle by a civilian drone.

Despite criticism from Colonel Igor Ischuk, in rare cases, Russian drones have their successes. For example, the Ministry of Defense of Russia released footage of a UAV unit that discovered and destroyed personnel of the Ukrainian army hiding in forest plantations.
