F-35C successfully fired StormBreaker guided bomb at .9 Mach
WASHINGTON — US Navy F-35 Lightning II [F-35C is the US Navy variant] has conducted a successful test of the StormBreaker guided bomb. The test was conducted jointly with Raytheon Missiles & Defense – the manufacturer of the weapon. During the test, the precision-guided bomb reached a speed of .9 Mach. The information was confirmed by a press release from Raytheon Missiles & Defense.

The US is trying to provide greater combat capability to its allies’ F-35 fighter jets. There were two guided bombs fired. The F-35C pilot was able to deploy them in a period of only 30 minutes. Raytheon says their successful release from the F-35C allowed the bombs to complete their assigned missions. The F-35B [US Marine Corps F-35 variant] is next will tests its weapons capabilities using the StormBreaker.
Paul Ferraro, president of Air Power at Raytheon Missiles & Defense, says fifth-generation platforms allow StormBreaker integration, and tests conducted prove that claim. According to him, “no other fielded air-to-surface weapon can accomplish what StormBreaker can against complex targets in contested environments.”
BulgarianMilitary.com recalls that the StormBreaker was already tested on another platform – the F-15E Strike Eagle. This happened earlier this year. In addition to the F-15E Strike Eagle and F-35B Lightning II, the US plans to integrate and test the weapon on another of its platforms – the F/A-18 Super Hornet.
The StormBreaker guided bomb is designed to engage moving and static targets at ranges of at least 45 miles. Experts say the StormBreaker is superior to older munitions of this type because of its increased payload. Thus, the new homing bomb can deal with more targets. This makes her highly effective and capable of fighting in real combat.
This guided precision bomb has an integrated multi-mode seeker in its structure. Raytheon says it’s an innovative solution. Last but not least, the bomb features a very powerful warhead, the company says. According to Raytheon, the multi-mode seeker and warhead make the StormBreaker an extremely versatile and effective weapon against enemy systems.
