It was noted that it was the largest American ship to visit Lithuania. “It is here to demonstrate unity and solidarity with Lithuania and other NATO allies,” the embassy said. The video of the meeting of the ship was published on the website of the Lithuanian Navy.
The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Force said the sailors will have the opportunity to visit the historic city of Klaipeda, “strengthening the ties between the United States and the countries that call the Baltic Sea home.”
USS Kearsarge is 257.3 m long, 60.1 m wide and 10.5 m deep. The crew is over 2 thousand people. The ship can accommodate hovercraft for rapid troop movement and AV-8B Harrier attack aircraft for air support.
The Kearsarge’s armament includes the NATO RIM-7 Sea Sparrow point defense system for anti-aircraft support, RIM-116 Rolling Frame missiles, 25mm chain guns, and the Phalanx weapon system to counter threats from low-flying aircraft and small craft. Decoy launchers complement anti-ship missile defense.
