WARSAW ($1=4.65 Polish Zlotys) — The first Abrams A1M2 SEPv3 tank of the 250 units purchased in mid-February has already arrived and is on Polish soil, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said in a tweet. The order is huge and divided into several batches, with this tank being the first of a batch of 28 tanks that will arrive in the coming weeks.

- Poland has own anti-UAV system – 12.7mm MG, radar, laser rangefinder

“The first of 28 Abrams tanks have arrived at the Training Center of the Ground Forces. Soon the soldiers of the Iron Division will begin training. This year we are still waiting for the Patriot and Bayraktar systems – attack drones that have proven themselves very well in the war in Ukraine,” says in his tweet the minister of war.
In February 2022, Poland ordered 250 American tanks, 26 M88A2 HERCULES, 276 units of M2 .50 caliber machine guns, 500 units of M240C 7.62 mm machine guns, and 250 AN / VLQ-12 CREW Duke counter-IED systems, 15 AGT1500 gas turbines. engines, 9,168 120 mm M865 cone-stabilized target cartridges, 4,592 120 mm M1002 Target Practice Multipurpose Tracer [TPMP-T] projectiles, 13,920 120 mm M830A1 high explosive anti-tank [HEAT] TP-T cartridges, 6,960 120 mm XM1147 High Explosive multi-purpose tracer. In this way, Warsaw made the largest military purchase in its history, estimated at a total value of 6 billion USD.
M1A2 SEP V3 Abrams upgrade
One of the main features of the M1A2 SEP V3 is the Israeli Trophy active defense complex, which can effectively intercept enemy ammunition with radar and striking elements.
Previously, the effectiveness of this system was confirmed in real combat operations when Israeli Merkava tanks equipped with Trophy fell under the fire of grenade launchers and anti-tank missile systems. At the same time, according to some experts, the complex will experience great difficulties if it is necessary to deal with modern shells flying at a speed of 1500-1700 m/s.
In addition to the Trophy, the upgraded tank received a JTRS radio communications system, an upgraded fire control system, an improved technology for structurally replaceable units, a new version of the remote control improvised explosive defense system, and some other important improvements.
The third Greywolf armored brigade of the first cavalry division was the first US unit to receive the upgraded Abrams M1A2 SEP V3 main battle tanks [MBT] in 2020.
On June 13 General Dynamics Land Systems announced that at the end of this year [October 10] will unveil the new next-generation armored combat vehicles – the Abrams tank and the Stryker ICV. The company’s announcement is short and it is unclear whether GDLS will unveil a SEPv4 version that is actually an upgrade or a new design for a brand new Abrams tank. The lack of this information is important as these are two different tanks and have their own different integrated systems, functionalities, and specifications.
The SEPv4 optical system, for example, will be iGPS / 3G FLIR, while the next-generation Abrams tank is expected to be completely replaced by new PASEO sights. PASEO is manufactured by the French company Safran Group and is a latest-generation very-long-range observation and attack sight. This optical system has a 360-degree panoramic view, cooled thermal imager [3-5 µm], integrated laser rangefinder with a range of just over 7 kilometers, biaxial stabilization for greater performance and durability in extreme off-road terrain, and built-in add-on armor [AOA].
The situation is similar to the weapon system of both tanks. According to sources, both tanks will have 120mm guns and 30x113mm RS6 RWS, but next-generation Abrams RWS must be operated independently, unlike SEPv4’s CSWS which is coaxial with CPS.
RS6 RWS is a product of Kongsberg – an international technology company based in Norway, but also with production facilities in the United States [210 Industrial Park Rd, Johnstown, PA 15904, US]. RS6 RWS has the following integrated weapons: XM914 [30 x 113 mm] with M240 [7.62] coax and one Javelin missile coaxially. According to customer requirements, this configuration can be with two Javelin missiles coaxially. The machine gun can also be replaced: from XM914 to Dual 40/50 using 40 mm AGL and Browning M2 [12.7 mm], which also allows for missiles coaxially. Which of the following options will be integrated into the next-generation Abrams remains unknown.
What exactly GDLS [SEPv4 or next-generation Abrams] will present on October 10 remains to be seen. But getting acquainted with the characteristics of both tanks, it seems that soon the US military will have a radically different from the hitherto known Abrams tanks. The future Abrams tank is likely to be a game-changing weapon system to meet modern threats.
