Abrams M1A2 SEPv2/SEPv3 tanks get fast-acting anti-threat APS
WASHINGTON — American company General Dynamics has been awarded a contract for just over 280 million euros [$287 million] to provide Trophy active protection system [APS] for Abrams main battle tanks.
- US M1A1 Abrams might get ‘hunter-kill’ anti-helicopter sensors
- Next-gen Abrams comes with PASEO and independently 30x113mm RS6

The Trophy system, developed by Israeli companies Rafael and IAI, is a suite capable of rapidly detecting, classifying and neutralizing threats ranging from recoilless rifles to anti-tank guided missiles, rockets, tank fire and rocket-propelled grenades. The system detects these threats and even locates the launch position to facilitate a faster response.
The new equipment will be installed on an unspecified number of US Army Abrams main battle tanks of the M1A2 SEPv2 and M1A2 SEPv3 versions during a period of operation expected to last until mid-2027.
Its developers assure that Trophy “is the only APS in the world, fully integrated and tested in battle”. Since 2010, the decision has protected the Merkava main battle tanks and Namer APC armored vehicles that are in the inventory of the Israel Defense Forces.
According to data provided by the Rafael company, last year the Trophy system had already accumulated more than one million hours of operation since it made its first operational interception in 2011. Since then, “it has made numerous combat interceptions” in which there were no injuries to the crews of armored vehicles or infantry, nor damage to platforms equipped with the system. During that time, a total of “5,400 successful field tests” were performed. Production of more than 1,800 of these systems is currently under contract.
By order of Germany and Great Britain
Trophy active protection systems [Trophy APS] were also ordered, by the way, the German Ministry of Defense also chose the Raphael Trophy for active protection of its Leopard 2 main battle tanks and British Challenger 3 main battle tanks. They will also have this protective system, in a lighter version called Trophy MV.
