See first automatic 40mm SSW40 magazine-loaded, shoulder-fired GL
PARIS ($1=0.95 Euros) — The grenade launcher was developed by the German company Rheinmetall, claiming that it could become a game-changing infantry weapon. This is a 40mm SSW40 that charges the grenades through a magazine and is a shoulder-fired version. SSW40 was presented at the already concluded exhibition for defense and security Eurosatory – Paris.

Without going into details, the SSW40 has an average size and weight of an assault rifle, according to Rheinmetall. SSW40 is short for Squad Support Weapon 40. Rheinmetal is said to have fired standard 40mm low-velocity munitions and 40mm Rheinmetall medium-velocity munitions. According to the manufacturer, this is achieved by reducing the recoil of the weapon, as well as one of the integrated functions in it – the weapon only regulates its recoil. The company says that various optical devices can be easily integrated to improve the accuracy of the damage: laser target designators, day or night sights, IR programmers, and more.
40mm Rheinmetall medium velocity ammunition can perform hits with a flat trajectory and high speed of charge. In this way, a quick defeat of the target is achieved. This type of ammunition is most effective 900 meters from the target.
Both types of ammunition can be loaded in the grenade launcher store, thus, says Rheinmetall, achieving flexibility and efficiency on the infantry battlefield. SSW40 is a next-generation grenade launcher designed to increase the combat capability of the soldier and ensure the successful completion of the mission so that the soldier also reduces the time spent during battle.
Rheinmetall sees a solution in SSW40 not only for the infantry as a human unit but also for the infantry’s armored vehicles. SSW40 is a project that in one way or another is connected to the turret of the TSWA secondary weapon system developed for the Puma infantry fighting machine. The new 40mm Rheinmetall medium velocity ammunition is also part of the whole project. Their role in the Puma infantry fighting vehicle is to ensure the destruction of cabbages near the vehicle.
These munitions are now officially available on international markets, but the SSW40 continues to be tested and developed by the German concern. It is assumed that next year the weapon will complete all production and test stages.
Rheinmetall says a soldier with an SSW40 can counter or stand up and hit a medium-heavy armored vehicle. Speed is crucial and therefore a quick change of cartridge is crucial and allows the use of weapons as an equivalent in different military scenarios.
