Russian-made Orlan-10 unarmed reconnaissance UAV crashed in Turkey

ANKARA ($1=17.36 Turkish Liras) — A Russian-made Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV] crashed in mountainous terrain in the Kurtyun district of Gyumyushan. The drone was found by civilians.

Citizens who went to collect mushrooms in the mountainous land between the village of Tilkicek and the Kazakbeli plateau in the Kurtun district found UAVs on the ground. Teams of the gendarmerie, which were sent to the region after the notification, found that the UAV with a wingspan of about 3 meters is a Russian-made unarmed model Orlan-10 for reconnaissance.

It is emphasized that the UAV, whose parachute seems to have opened, made an emergency landing in the area. Turkish media recall that some time ago a Russian-made Orlan-10 crashed in Sanlıurfa, also in Turkey. The UAV that crashed in Gumushan may have come from three distances: the Black Sea, Syria, and Armenia. Orlan-10 is actively used by the Armenian army.

Why the downloaded UAV cannot be detected?

The incident sparked a wide-ranging public debate in Turkey over “why the drone was not discovered by the military” after 350 km from where the distance to the border with Armenia and Syria crashed. To detect UAVs like the Orlan-10, which is quite small, an integrated and multi-layered military radar network must be installed in the region.

The current radar network in Turkey is designed primarily to detect manned aircraft and UAVs of the MALE [medium-altitude long-endurance UAV] class. However, with the development of the low-altitude radar developed by ASELSAN, progress is expected in the future in the detection of Orlan-10 equivalent systems. On the other hand, for the precise detection of such UAVs, relatively inexpensive radars designed to detect drones, such as Meteksan Defense manufactured by Retinar FAR-AD, are also a kind of solution.

The Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle was developed by the Center for Special Technologies and is actively used by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. Orlan-10, which has a wingspan of 3.1 meters and a length of 2 meters, has a maximum takeoff weight of 16.5 kilograms. It is claimed that the UAV can stay in the air for up to 16 hours.
