Ukraine gets a new Harpoon TLS: variant that US Army doesn’t have
KYIV ($1=29.63 Ukrainian Hryvnias) — The United States will provide two Harpoon missile defense systems to Ukraine, a truck-launched system [TLS] variant, which even the US military does not have, according to the online portal Defense One. The US Department of Defense confirmed the information on June 15 in a press release.
- UK had to upgrade M270s, but sends them with M31A1s to Ukraine
- Ukraine spends 6,000 projectiles a day, its Soviet ammo ran out
- Spain sends retired Aspide SAMs Mach 4 and Leopard 2A4s to Ukraine
According to the US Department of Defense, in addition to two Harpoon TLS, Ukraine will receive from the US government the following weapons: 18,155mm howitzers; 36,000 rounds of 155mm ammunition; 18 tactical vehicles to tow 155mm howitzers; additional ammunition for high mobility artillery rocket systems [HIMARS]; four tactical vehicles to recover equipment; spare parts and other equipment, thousands of secure radios; thousands of night vision devices, thermal sights, and other optics; funding for training, maintenance, sustainment, transportation, and administrative costs.
According to the Ukrainian edition mil.in.ua, the new version of the Harpoon coastal missile system will be integrated into wheeled chassis, and the entire configuration was created specifically at the request of the Pentagon. There is information that the system was developed for the needs of the Taiwan Coast Guard, which according to sources 25 systems are to be delivered by 2028. As the United States does not have a Harpoon TLS, both systems will be provided by European partners.
BulgarianMilitary.com recalls that only a few weeks ago Denmark decided to provide Ukraine with Harpoon missile systems, which were in service with the Danish Armed Forces. These are two Danish launchers with 4 guides each. Recently, the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Alexei Reznikov said that Harpoon anti-ship missiles have already strengthened Ukraine’s coastal defense.
BulgariaMilitary.com recalls that Harpoon is an anti-ship missile for all weather conditions, located on the horizon, developed and manufactured by McDonnell Douglas [Boeing Defense, Space & Security]. The Harpoon anti-ship missile has variants of the AGM-84E SLAM and the later developed cruise missile AGM-84H / K SLAM-ER.
The Harpoon missile uses GPS-assisted inertial navigation to hit land and sea targets. The 227-kilogram warhead targets a wide variety of ground targets such as coastal defense zones, surface-to-air missiles, open aircraft, port / industrial facilities, and various ports, including ships in ports. It can provide deadly firepower against targets.
The Harpoon missile can be launched from aircraft [AGM-84], ships [RGM-84], submarines [UGM-84], or mobile coastal defense vehicles. The Harpoon AShM is fitted with a solid-fuel rocket booster and encapsulated in a container to allow submerged launch through a torpedo tube.
This missile is just over 4.6 meters long. It has a different operating range depending on the booster. The rocket speed is high subsonic and reaches 460 knots. It weighs 628 kilograms and is in service in dozens of countries around the world.
