Turkey tested SKYLAND CIWS: 35mm double cannon, 1,100 shots/min
ANKARA, ($1=14.88 Turkish Liras) — The Gokdeniz [Skyland] air defense system, developed by Asselsan, successfully passed the final stage of tests conducted on a Turkish warship. A high-velocity target was fired, and as soon as it approached the ship’s proximate range, it was attacked by Skyland and destroyed.

Skyland is a local anti-aircraft naval weapons system developed under a project of the Presidency of the Defense Industries and must meet the needs of the Navy Command.
The President of the Presidency of the Defense Industry, Prof. Dr. İsmail Demir, announced on his social media accounts: “A holiday gift from our defense industry! The Gokdeniz short-range air defense system, developed for our fleet, successfully destroyed the high-speed target during its last fire test on the ship. Gokdeniz will be ready to be on duty at the Istanbul frigate this year.”
Skyland is an extremely important short-range air defense system as the last layer in the protection of ship platforms against air threats. These systems, which are defined in the world as the close-in weapon system [CIWS], allow ships to be protected against a wide range of threats such as unmanned aerial vehicles, aircraft, and helicopters, especially anti-ship missiles.
The Skyland system, in addition to a 35 mm cannon, has a search radar, tracking radar, and E/O sensors that are integrated into the platform. In this way, the system can perform all functions of target detection, threat prioritization, automatic tracking, and destruction of the involved threat.
The system uses a 35 mm double cannon, manufactured by MKE, which has a firing rate of 1100 shots per minute. Thanks to the use of ammunition for particulate matter called ATOM, which is a joint production of Aselsan and MKE, high efficiency against current air threats can be achieved.
Another important feature of Skyland is the automatic belt feed mechanism without tape. Thanks to this mechanism, two or more types of ammunition can be loaded into the system at the same time, and the operator can select and use the desired type of ammunition. The Skyland system, can be used against ground targets as well as against air threats.
All major sub-components in Skyland are developed and manufactured by the Turkish defense industry.
