US seeks a new howitzer sensor system due to gaps in the old ones
WASHINGTON — The United States has announced the possibility of a futures contract for the supply of new sensor systems for its self-propelled howitzers, BulgarianMilitary.com has learned, citing SAM.gov.

According to the US government, existing imaging sensors have gaps in their capabilities. To address these gaps, new sensor systems will need to provide better passive monitoring, detection, and identification of threats day and night. New sensor systems must be effective in all weather conditions.
The request for new sensor systems for self-propelled howitzers of the US Army was issued by the Weapons & Software Engineering Center, Advanced Armaments Division, Artillery Fire Control Systems Branch of the Development Command Armament Center [DEVCOM AC].

What is this DEVCOM AC request looking for?
There are several criteria according to which DEVCOM AC will have to choose a supplier of the new sensor systems. One of the first is the ability of the sensor system to identify target combat vehicles [2.3m x 2.3m target] at no less than 3000 m [Threshold], 5000 m [Objective].
Another criterion is the provision of at least two fields of view to the sensor system. The narrowest FOV [NFOV] must be not less than 2 ° [Threshold],> 3,5 ° [Lens] horizontally and 1,5 °,> 2 ° [Lens] vertically. The Sensor System, in a FOV 4x – 5x the angular extent of the NFOV, shall allow the vehicle commander to detect threat combat vehicles in Fairweather at no less than 3500 m [Threshold], 6000 m [Objective]. The Sensor System shall in this wider FOV detect threat combat vehicles in the presence of battlefield obscurants at no less than 2000 m [Threshold], 3000 m [Objective].
DEVCOM AC requires the focus of the future sensor system to change automatically, electronically. Also, the temperature range at which the sensor system will have to operate in the future is specified: -45 ° F in the low limit and 145 ° F in the high limit.
Last but not least, the sensor system must be well equipped and sealed so that it does not leak dust. Vehicle vibration and how the system handles it is also a criterion that needs to be improved according to the published request. The future sensor system must withstand a transient atmospheric pressure of 14 PSI, provide video over a cable connection with a latency of less than 60 ms and be able to receive commands via RS 422 or Ethernet.
