Su-75 Checkmate fixes F-117A weaknesses and may get a vector jet nozzle

MOSCOW, ($1=98.50 Russian Rubles) — According to a published patent of the Su-75 by the Federal Intellectual Property Office of the Russian Federation, the designers and developers of the latest single-engine stealth fighter of the fifth-generation Su-75 Checkmate must correct the shortcomings and weaknesses of the American Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk.

According to a patent text, the designers compared the Su-75 to several modern or iconic fighters in the past, looking for their weaknesses. For example, the goal of Russian designers was to improve the performance of the Su-75 during landing and takeoff, including insufficient stability and controllability during flight. These features are listed as disadvantages for the American Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk.

“The invention’s technical result was the achievement of the aircraft’s better stability and controllability without decreasing its radar stealth parameters,” the document reads.

The patent states that the Su-75 can receive a vector jet nozzle, which can be located on the axis of symmetry of the fuselage and be used for control and trimming in flight. The vector jet nozzle will rotate in all directions, but only in height, ie. up and down.

Su-75 Checkmate

The Su-75 Checkmate is a fifth-generation Russian single-engine stealth fighter. It was first presented last year in Dubai, and according to unconfirmed information, the United Arab Emirates is participating in the project through funding.

It is assumed that the Su-75 will receive an AL-41F1 engine, but it will be modified specifically for the Su-75 according to its characteristics. The speed to be reached [characteristic set by the manufacturer] is 1.8 Mach. The combat radius is expected to be 3,000 km. The fighter will be armed with air-to-air, air-to-ground weapons systems, as well as electronic warfare systems. The first flight is expected to take place next year, and in 2025 to begin mass production.

The Russians say it is a sweat-fueled fighter jet that meets the needs of governments and armed forces with limited funding but wants to own a deadly and competitive fighter jet. The most common name for Chekmate’s first foreign client is the Vietnam Air Force. India also has appetites, but they are more focused on developing stealth than buying the fighter.

Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk is an attacking tactical single-engine stealth fighter, developed in the 80s of the last century. Back then, his main mission was to secretly infiltrate the enemy’s air defenses. There are a total of five recorded combat missions, and in 2008 the United States officially decommissioned the Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk. The F-117 has a low signature due to the specific angular shape of the hull, composite and radar-absorbing materials, and a special coating.
