OSLO, ($1=8.78 Norwegian Krones) — The Royal Norwegian Navy [Norwegian: Sjøforsvaret, lit. ‘Sea defense’] intends to modernize its lead warship HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen F310, has learned. The intentions for modernization are revealed through a press release from the Norwegian Technology Group in the Maritime Trade, Defense, and Aerospace Industries Kongsberg Gruppen.

According to the announcement, Kongsberg and the Spanish shipyard Navantia have already signed a memorandum of understanding to co-operate and support the future modernization of the warship HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen F310. reminds us that it was the Spanish Navantia that built this Nansen-class ship. Then in the period 2006 and 2011 Kongsberg was the main subcontractor of the Idpan shipyard, organizing the supply of anti-surface and submarine systems, as well as the navigation system.

It is not clear from the press release what modernization the ship will undergo – whether the upgrade of combat and weapons systems, software and hardware systems or rough mechanics and engineering activities on the ship’s hull. But according to the signed memorandum of cooperation between the two companies, an “evaluation process to provide the best solutions for the Norwegian armed forces” is about to begin.

The displacement of the ship is 5,290 tons, being 134 meters long. The ship is powered by both diesel and gas, thanks to two Bazan Bravo 12V 4.5 MW diesel engines and one gas turbine GE LM2500 21.5 MW, which ensures the warship achieves high speed. The HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen F310 is equipped with MAAG gearboxes, and the tilt-controlled propellers are driven by two shafts. The ship is equipped with a retractable new electric motor, as well as four diesel generators MTU 396 series 12V 1250 KVA. The maximum sailing speed is 27 knots or 50 km / h.

The HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen F310 radar system is provided by Lockheed Martin and is AN / SPY-1F 3-D multifunction radar. There is a separate integrated air/sea surveillance radar type Reutech RSR 210N. MRS 2000 mounted on the hull, while separately has an integrated and active-passive towed sonar Captas MK II V1. The ship has integrated special fire control radars type Mark 82 – a total of two in number.

Armament of HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen F310

The armament of the HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen F310 is also impressive. The ship has an 8-cell system for the vertical launch of Mk41 missiles, in which 32 anti-aircraft missiles against RIM-162 ESSM missiles and aircraft are loaded and ready for combat. The ship is armed with a total of eight Naval Strike Missile SSMs, as well as four torpedo tubes for Sting Ray torpedoes.

The main gun is a 76mm OTO Melara Super Rapid gun supported by a total of four 12.7 mm Browning M2HB heavy machine guns installed. In addition, there are four integrated Norwegian remotely controlled weapons station model Protector RWS. The ship also has two long-range acoustic devices [LRAD]. LRAD is an acoustic hailing device [AHD], sound cannon, and a sonic weapon. There is a helicopter landing pad on the ship.

HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen F310 has a flexible architecture and is prepared [but not installed] to accept more weapons from the already mentioned.
