Australia has ordered a gyro-based Sterna fire support system
CANBERRA, ($1=1.37 Australian Dollars) — Safran Electronics & Defense Australia has been awarded a contract by Collins Aerospace to supply the full range of Advanced Portable Optronics to the Australian Defense Force [ADF] as part of the Land 17 Phase 2 Digital Terminal Control Systems [DTCS] Capability Assurance Program.

As Safran continues in a statement, the company wants to complete the delivery by mid-2023. With the contract, Safran continues its longstanding support of Collins Aerospace and the Australian Defense Forces. Safran’s JIM Compact, Moskito TI, and Sterna systems, along with Collins Aerospace tripods, will be integrated into the next-generation DTCS.
Safran Electronics & Defense offers a wide range of portable optronic products, including state-of-the-art multispectral binoculars, homing devices, and laser rangefinders, used by Joint Fires Observers [JFOs], Joint Terminal Attack Controllers [JTACs], and Special Forces worldwide. These devices feature the latest digital software capabilities and are compatible with combat-on-foot combat systems.
Sterna von Safran is a gyro-based targeting system that accurately determines north in virtually any terrain. It will bring a new capability to the Australian Armed Forces. This is critical for operators who require a high level of accuracy regardless of weather, battlefield clutter, or environments where GPS is not available.
According to the announcement, the new contract follows an existing one from Phase 1 of the program, which Collins has supported for over 10 years. Collins Aerospace is a Raytheon Technologies company.
The DTCS is a targeting system used to request and coordinate fire support missions from land, sea, or air platforms. The next-generation DTCS system offers advanced capabilities such as improved energy management for longer mission duration as well as increased night combat capability. In addition to Safran’s solutions mentioned above, Leonardo’s Laser Target Designator Type 163 is also part of the new equipment.
