“I have decided to conduct a special military operation. Its goal is to protect people who have been subjected to violence, genocide by the regime in Kyiv for eight years. And that is why we will strive to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine. And also to bring to justice those who have committed many bloody crimes against civilians, including citizens of the Russian Federation,” Putin said in an address to the Russians. “At the same time, our plans do not include the occupation of Ukrainian territories. We will not impose anything on anyone by force,” Putin said.

Only military facilities are being destroyed on the territory of Ukraine

“The statements of the Ukrainian side that civilian objects are being destroyed are lies. Only military objects are being destroyed,” Basurin said on Russia 24 TV channel (VGTRK). He said the special military operation was in response to Kyiv’s aggressive actions in Donbas.“The eight-year aggression against Donbas led to the fact that the leaders of the DPR and LPR were forced to turn to the Russian Federation for military assistance. The lawlessness led to the fact that the Russian Federation decided to conduct a special military operation,” he said.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced the suppression of air defense systems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. “Ukraine’s air defense systems have been suppressed,” a statement from the Defense Ministry said.

Ukraine under attack

Pro-Russian media and social media profiles say the situation is critical at the moment, describing it as a “war” between Russia and Ukraine. BulgarianMilitary.com monitors all information channels on both sides of the conflict.

According to pro-Russian news agencies [Avia.pro and ASB News], the Ukrainian fleet was completely destroyed [perhaps referring to disarmed – ed.] In less than 40 minutes. The information may refer to multiple strikes on Odesa and the bases of the Ukrainian navy.

NBC journalist Matt Bradley, citing Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the head of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, claims that Russian troops landed in Odessa in southwestern Ukraine.

However, Ukraine has officially announced that at 5.00 am Russian troops attacked Ukrainian military sites and airports without providing further information. The Armed Forces of Ukraine declared that they were repelling the attack. “The country’s defense forces are in full combat readiness, they have occupied and are holding defensive positions. The situation is under control. Information about the landing of Russian troops in Odesa is not true,” the General Staff of Ukraine added.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba posted a tweet saying “Putin has just launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Peaceful Ukrainian cities are under strikes.”
