‘Su-35 crashed’, Indonesia ordered 36 F-15 and 42 Rafale in a day

JAKARTA, ($1=13,344.75 Indonesian Rupiah) — The US State Department has approved the delivery of 36 F-15ID multi-role fighters to Indonesia, which are analogs of the F-15EX Eagle II aircraft, BulgarianMilitary.com has learned, citing a statement from the US State Department.

In addition to the actual fighters, the procurement portfolio for Indonesia includes the supply of a full range of on-board and above-ground equipment, such as on-board radars, helmet target delivery systems, containers with above-ground reconnaissance equipment, and more. The value of deliveries on this portfolio of orders will reach 14 billion dollars.

So far, Indonesia plans to purchase only eight F-15EX fighters with a delivery date no earlier than 2027. It is not known when Indonesians expect to receive their 36 F-15ID aircraft. There is no information on where the money will come from.

But it is worth noting that this order for F-15 fighters for Indonesia is a record in terms of cost. By comparison, Qatar will pay “only” $ 12 billion for the delivery of the 36 newest F-15QA fighters.

On February 10, Dassault Aviation CEO Erika Trapier and Indonesian Vice Marshal Yusuf Jauhari signed the final contract in the capital, Jakarta, for the supply of 42 Rafale fighters.

The price of the contract and the sources of financing are not disclosed. It is known that the French promised to deliver to Indonesia not only aircraft but also – equipment for a training center, direct training of pilots, and service technicians for Rafale. France has also promised to take on all the work to build the airport infrastructure needed for Rafale.

According to some estimates, the delivery of all 42 French fighters to the Indonesian Air Force is planned for 2022-2024. France and Indonesia needed several steps to reach a final agreement on the supply of Rafales. In the summer of 2021, the two countries signed a preliminary agreement for the supply of 36 fighters, while at the same time agreed in early 2022 to conclude a final contract.

In early February this year, it became known that Indonesia wants to increase its order book with six more aircraft. And so the two sides approached the date and conclusion of the final contract for the supply of “Rafale”.

Indonesia originally planned to buy new fighter jets in Russia. In 2018, Indonesians and Russians signed a contract to supply 11 Su-35C aircraft worth $ 1.1 billion. In 2021, Indonesia terminated the contract, citing a lack of money in the budget. But the Russians say in their publications that the real reason for the termination of the agreement is hidden US pressure and the threat of sanctions.

Currently, the Indonesian Air Force has about 10 Su-27 fighters and about 10 Su-30 fighters purchased from Russia. Also – 36 F-16 fighters. Indonesia received all these aircraft in the early 2000s.
