Patria may take over the MRO of F100 PW engines for F-16 and F-15
HELSINKI, ($1=0.88 Euros) — The Finnish concern in the development and production of high-tech weapons systems Patria can be a global provider of logistical support, including maintenance, repair, and overhaul [MRO] of the F100. The news comes amid expressed intentions by Patria and US engine maker Pratt & Whitney to continue long-standing military supply cooperation.
- Patria hopes for large-scale production of F-35’s front fuselages

- Finland: new anti-aircraft systems in the shadow of the Finnish HX fighter program
The F100-PW-220 / 220E engines drive the F-16, while the F100-PW-229 drives the F-15. Patria will continue to be a key partner of Pratt & Whitney, and the Finnish company is confident that it is ready to “become part of the global Pratt & Whitney F100 maintenance network and become the best provider of logistics support, including support. repair and overhaul of the F100.”
The potential for Patria to become a “global leader” in maintaining the Pratt & Whitney F100 is great. Moreover, Patria and Pratt & Whitney are launching a joint working group, which in 2022 should propose a strategy and outline a framework for cooperation between companies.
Patria is not a casual player in the field of logistics, maintenance, repair, and overhaul. The company has been doing this for years. Patria’s portfolio includes services such as aerospace and military stock selection and delivery, intelligence, surveillance, and management systems. One of Patria’s centers abroad, the one in the Belgian city of Liege, already supports the F100 PW engines of at least 15 air forces worldwide.
BulgarianMilitary.com reminds that only a month ago Finland signed an agreement with the United States for the acquisition of 64 F-35 A Block 4 fighters. The deal is for 4.7 billion euros. Even then, the next day, Patria expressed a desire to become part of the global network for the supply of equipment for the F-35. The ambitions of the Finnish leader in military production go further – Patria hopes to become part of the production network of front fuselages for the Finnish F-35.
As we said in the middle of last month, this deal opens the door to extensive industrial cooperation in the field of defense between the United States and Finland, and the deal is expected to employ “4,500 person-years directly and 1,500 indirectly.”
Apart from Patria, other local Finnish companies are expected to take over part of the production of various components for the aircraft.
The Letter of Intent
It seems that Pratt & Whitney and Patria are on the same wave to deepen their future collaboration. According to a press release from the Finnish concern, “the cooperation has been going on for more than 40 years and it is a natural continuum for that.”
Mikko Kilpelainen, VP, Partnerships at Patria, says that if Patria takes on logistical support, including maintenance, repair, and overhaul of the F100, the company will guarantee its growth strategy and open up new opportunities with a partner like Pratt & Whitney.
“Pratt & Whitney is excited about this collaboration opportunity with Patria. The Letter of Intent provides a solid foundation for our teams to define our future business arrangement as a participant in our sustainment global network,” says Kelly Young, Senior Director, F100 Pratt & Whitney.
