Belgium gets DND’s multifunctional RGW90 with a HEAT/HESH warhead
BRUSSELS, ($1=0.89 Euros) — The Belgian Armed Forces procure several batches of RGW90 HEAT/HESH A2 multifunctional weapons and training ammunition for RGW-90 sub-caliber training systems worth a total of about 19 million euros from the German manufacturer Dynamit Nobel Defense [DND]. A statement released by DND said the contract was awarded by NATO’s NSPA supply body in late 2021.
- Belgium upgrades based communication systems of Its armoured and combat vehicles
- Belgium and UK will cooperate in the use of the MQ-9B SkyGuardian UAVs
- Swedish Saab delivers a training center for the Belgian Army totaling $17 million
According to reports, this is the first order that the German armament specialist with RGW 90 has fulfilled through the NSPA. As a result of the implementation of the NSPA, it is now possible for other stakeholders to join the contract under the conditions agreed with Belgium, without having to start a long-term public procurement project themselves.
The RGW90 HH [HEAT/HESH] A2 has a warhead with a uniform charge and can therefore also be used against armored vehicles. Weighing about eight kilograms, it can pierce more than 600 millimeters of armored steel at a combat distance of 500 meters – the probability of hitting more than 90 percent of NATO’s standard target of 2.3 meters x 2.3 meters. Thus, with the RGW90 HH, for example, T54 or T72 battle tanks – provided they do not have jet armor – can be successfully guided.
Dynamit Nobel is constantly developing its weapon system. RGW 90HH-T with HEAT/HESH warhead with tandem charge is in the prototype phase. DND has not yet specified the availability of this type of ammunition on the market. With a similar size to the RGW90 HH, this type of ammunition must produce even greater penetration and also be able to fight tanks equipped with jet protection.
