Turkish T929 ATAK 2 Navy helo will fly by a turbocharged engine
ANKARA, ($1=13.55 Turkish Liras) — Turkey is considering developing a naval version of the promising heavy-duty helicopter T929 ATAK 2 to deploy the Turkish multi-purpose universal landing craft [UDC] TCG Anadolu, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, citing Defense Express, and the Defense Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Turkish Aerospace Industries [TAI] Temel Kotila. Asked by Defense Turk if there would be a naval version of Atak and Gökbey for TCG Anadolu, Temel Kotil replied: “We are currently considering a naval version of ATAK 2.”

It is also reported that the Turkish Navy is currently approaching the deployment of heavy attack helicopters of TCG Anadolu and similar platforms. In addition to heavy ammunition, such a helicopter will be able to perform tasks in more difficult sea conditions.
Temel Kotil also announced that the 11-ton ATAK 2 attack helicopter will be launched for the first time in 2022. The helicopter is scheduled to make its first flight in 2023. Earlier, the CEO of TAI announced that the engines of the heavy strike ATAK 2 helicopter will come from Ukraine, and a contract was signed.
Earlier, BulgarianMilitary.com reported that Motor Sich JSC [part of the League of Defense Enterprises of Ukraine] has signed a contract with Turkish Aerospace Industries [TAI] for the supply of engines. The relevant message was published on June 29, 2021, on the official Twitter account of TAI.
It was a batch of 14 turbocharged engines that are planned to be installed on promising ATAK 2 heavy-duty helicopters. According to the agreement, the first two engines are to be delivered to Turkey in September next year. And the other 12 engines – until 2025.
Earlier, the Turkish side said that due to the lack of its engines of this class [with a total power of about 2,500 hp] and some misunderstandings with Western countries, it considers Ukraine as a future supplier of engines.
The ATAK 2 is considered a modern 11-ton attack helicopter capable of carrying up to 1,500 kg of a wide range of ammunition [missiles or small bombs] and a 30-mm automatic cannon.
The new machine is expected to significantly strengthen the capabilities of the Turkish Armed Forces and replace the T129 ATAK light helicopters [licensed version of the Italian AW129 from Leonardo] and later become the main strike force of the Turkish Air Force.
