China sells CH-5 UAVs armed with ATGM and guided bombs to Algeria

BEIJING, ($1=6.36 Chinese Yuans) — The Chinese claim that such drones can carry not only up to 1000 kg of combat payload but also – EW or radio reconnaissance. According to Mena Defense, Algeria has ordered the delivery of five CH-5 reconnaissance and strike drones to China, has learned, citing the Defense Express. Delivery time and price are not disclosed.

To date, China has sold its reconnaissance drones to Algeria, including five CH-3s and five CH-4s in 2018. By the end of 2022, the Algerian army will have a fleet of 60 different types of drones. This was announced by the Army Recognition portal.

China claims that its CH-5 UAVs have outstanding characteristics, including that such drones can stay in the air for up to 30 hours without interruption while covering a distance of up to 10,000 kilometers at speeds of up to 220 km / h.

The maximum flight altitude of the CH-5 UAV is specified at the level of 9 kilometers, the working altitude of the flight is at the level of 5 kilometers. The take-off weight of this UAV with a wingspan of 20 meters can reach 3.3 tons.

The combat load can reach 1000 kg – or guided bombs or up to 16 guided anti-tank missiles. At the same time, the Chinese claim that their CH-5 drone could also be a carrier of EW or radio reconnaissance systems.

As previously reported by, a direct military adversary of Algeria – Morocco in October 2021 gave Turkey an order worth $ 70 million for unmanned aerial vehicles Bayraktar TB2. The order includes 13 drones, 4 control stations, secure communication systems, and a simulator for training UAV operators.

According to military experts, HJ-12 will replace the old Soviet complexes that were developed in the first half of the 1970s. The Red Arrow-12 is one of the systems that operates on the “launch and forget” principle. It was first shown in 2014.

The total mass reaches 22 kg. The missile itself weighs 17 kilograms, and another 5 kilograms is a target, and it has thermal imaging channels, day and night, in addition to a laser range finder. The total length of the launch container is 1200 mm.

Dimensions and weight allow this weapon to be used from the shoulder. The maximum shooting range in daylight conditions is 4,000 meters, at night it drops to 2,000 meters.
