CAIRO, ($1=15.72 Egyptian Pound) — Egypt will pay the United States approximately $ 355 million to acquire three anti-ballistic and anti-aircraft ground-based 3D radars SPS-48 LBR manufactured by L3 Harris Surveillance Systems, BulgarianMilitary.com has learned, citing Defense Security Cooperation Agency [DSCA].

Following the implementation of the entire program and order from Cairo, the “pharaohs” will also buy engine generators, spare parts, repeaters, and more. The total amount of the deal includes a commitment from the United States to repair or upgrade processors, track management system, communications equipment, UPS power, as well as to provide technical guidance and staff training.

The SPS-48 LBR ground-based radar is one of the flagships of L3 Harris Surveillance Systems. The radar is constantly updated to get better features and meet customer requirements. SPS-48 LBR can operate in all weather conditions and meet many requirements. One of the hallmarks of the SPS-48 LBR is its ability to detect and track targets with very low levels of false alarms.

The SPS-48 LBR is a multi-use, high-performance air surveillance radar that detects and tracks airborne targets, queues weapons systems, and provides excellent hazardous weather detection and display. Transmitter power, beam spacing in both elevation and azimuth, pulse rates, and instrumented range are all configurable so that system capacity can be modified to meet changing mission requirements.

The SPS-48 LBR consists of an antenna that performs frequency scanning, a transmitter, a superheterodyne receiver with a digitally controlled frequency synthesizer, a Doppler signal processor, an integrated built-in test system [BIT], a scalable modular system, etc.

Egypt is an old customer of L3 Harris Surveillance Systems. The same radar has long been in service among the Egyptian military, which means that Egyptians will have no problems installing and using it.

According to the United States, this sale will not change the military balance in the region. Production of the SPS-48 LBR is outsourced to L3 Harris Surveillance Systems, Van Nice, CA and, as far as is known, the company will not be subcontracting. It is assumed that American specialists and engineers will participate in the review of the installation of the radar in Egypt, as well as monitor its testing after it is installed.
