Australia adopted first 500lb high explosive warhead BLU-111 B/B
CANBERRA, ($1=1.39 AUS) – The Australian Air Force has adopted the first Australian-made BLU-111 B / B warhead, learned BulgarianMilitary.com, citing a press release from the Australian Ministry of Defense.
- Australia will produce 155mm M795 artillery shells for the US
- Taiwan and Australia arm themselves with US-made Mk 48 torpedoes
- Australia buys 200 Javelin anti-tank guided missiles from the United States
The high-explosive warhead, which weighs 500 feet, was accepted into the 3rd Squadron at the RAAF Williamtown base – the same one that performed the integration test and training flight of an F-35 fighter loaded with BLU-111 B/B.
The first Australian warhead was a joint production between the US government and the Australian manufacturer Australian Munitions. The Australian warhead must replace the obsolete Mk82. According to a statement from the Australian Ministry of Defense, the domestic production of the BLU-111 B / B will ensure “the ability (of Australia) to continue to improve the security and productivity of weapons to best meet the needs of the Air Force.” The Australian military, and in particular the Australian military industry, sees the production of the BLU-111 B / B as a major success and proof that kangaroos can develop and manufacture sensitive weapon systems.
BulgarianMilitary.com reminds us that Australia has a tradition in the development of warheads for combat aircraft, but BLU-111 B / B is the first such precise and new generation product. According to experts, the production of this warhead could change the local production of explosives. This is because the technique of polymer explosive filling has been changed, which also changes the design characteristics. This improves work safety as it reduces the possibility of an accident or explosion during work.
The BLU-111 (AUS) B / B will be part of the weapons capabilities of several aircraft – F-35, F / A-18F Super Hornet, Hawk 127, as well as the unmanned aerial vehicle MQ-9B Sky Guardian. According to Guy Adams, Director of Air Force Combat Capabilities, BLU-111 (AUS) B / B increases Australia’s autonomy and ability to conduct air battles.
According to the Australian Ministry of Defense, in the future, it is possible that Australia will start production of BLU-111 (AUS) B / B for foreign customers, partners of the country.
