SAAB’s Sea Giraffe radars into Canadian Halifax-class frigates
OTTAWA, ($1=1.29 Canadian Dollars) – The Royal Canadian Navy continues to modernize its Halifax-class frigates. After the Canadian government announced in the middle of the year that Halifax-class frigates would receive a new management system or IPMS, it became clear yesterday [December 20th] that the Swedish company Saab will integrate its Sea Giraffe radars.
- Canada pays $1,7B for a new integrated naval weapon systems
- Vertical take-off UAVs into service in Canadian Coast Guard
- Canada will upgrade eight permanent surveillance systems
Canada will pay the Swedish company 300 million Swedish kronor or $ 33 million. The value of the deal, in addition to the integration of the new radars, also includes the supply of related equipment and spare parts. Work on the agreement will take place in two places – Canada and Sweden, and the Canadian government hopes that by 2026 the integration will be completed successfully.
The Canadian fleet of Halifax-class frigates has launched a series of upgrades initiated by the Canadian government to extend its service life and improve fleet performance. BulgarianMilitary.com reminds you that in addition to upgrading the IPMS and radar system, Halifax-class frigates recently upgraded the 9LV weapon system by integrating additional sensors and weapons.
According to Saab manufacturers, their Sea Giraffe AMB radar surpasses much of the existing and used military 3D radar. Sea Giraffe AMB is suitable for work both for guarding and patrolling in coastal waters, and for military operations in the blue waters. Saab says its radar is a compact and lightweight radar infrastructure capable of delivering great power.
Sea Giraffe AMB operates in the C-band, providing 360 ° monitoring, high refresh rates, and a 1-second time to revisit the target. Sea Giraffe AMB is a fully automated radar system and, in addition to ships, classifies and tracks aircraft, helicopters, small drones, jammers, and ballistic missiles.
This radar monitors both water and air, with integrated early warning systems. It has a very fast response time and extensive electronic countermeasures.
Sea Giraffe AMB is a proven and extremely popular radar vehicle, used in 30 countries on all continents. In the United States, the Sea Giraffe AMB is installed on the Independence-class littoral battleship as AN / SPS-77 and AN / SPS-77V, and in the United Kingdom, its ground and air versions are used.
