Airbus Corporation is commissioned by the Spanish Ministry of Defense to develop a combat training aircraft, the project is called Advanced Fighter Jet Trainer, writes the portal Defense News.
If the Spanish Defense Ministry approves the project, in just four years a new training and combat aircraft should be in service with the national air force. Currently, the Spanish Air Force uses F-5M and CASA C-101 Aviojet as training aircraft, which are used to train pilots of EF-18A Hornet and Eurofighter Typhoon fighters.
Spanish F-5Ms will last a maximum of 2027, and this explains the short deadlines for work that the Spanish Ministry of Defense has set for Airbus
The Spanish Air Force wants to buy at least 20 new Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, and also – “aim” to buy F-35 fighters. The training of pilots for fifth-generation aircraft requires an appropriate level of “flying desk”, and this is another reason why the Spanish Ministry of Defense wants to accelerate the development and production of a new training and combat aircraft for its needs.
