“By 2025, China will be fully prepared for a full-scale invasion of Taiwan,” he told lawmakers as he considered an $ 8.6 billion military budget. He noted: “Now he has such opportunities, but it will not be easy for him to start a war, as he will have to take into account many other factors.” The official said the current situation in the Taiwan Strait is the tensest in 40 years.
According to Taiwanese media with relations with the authorities, 56 planes from the Chinese Air Force flew into the air defense zone of Taiwan on Monday. According to reports, 148 military planes from mainland China have flown through the area in the past four days.
Such actions by the PRC Air Force are undermining regional peace, said Taiwan’s chief of staff Su Zhengchang. “Taiwan needs to be vigilant. China is increasingly out of reach. The world is witnessing repeated instances of China undermining regional peace and putting pressure on Taiwan,” he told reporters in Taipei.
U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said Sunday last week: “The United States is very concerned about the provocative military activities of the People’s Republic of China off Taiwan, which are destabilizing, miscalculated and undermining regional peace and stability.”
US President Joe Biden said the United States and China must abide by an earlier “Taiwanese agreement”.
“I spoke with Xi Jinping about Taiwan. We agree … we will abide by the Taiwan agreement. We have made it clear that I do not think that Beijing should do anything other than abide by the agreement,” Biden told reporters about strained relations between mainland China and the island. A telephone conversation between Biden and Xi Jinping took place on September 9.
The president did not specify what kind of agreement was being discussed. Commenting on Biden’s remarks, the media noted that he was referring to the 1979 diplomatic documents in which Washington acknowledged the existence of a China.
Chinese media on Tuesday confirmed the flights of 56 planes in the Taiwan Strait, noting that this is a precautionary measure in connection with the conduct of naval exercises in the area of six countries involving two American and one British group of aircraft carriers.
