Hypersonic missile ‘hunters’ are designing in the US

WASHINGTON – In the United States, work continues on the design of satellites that will have to “capture” and transmit both hypersonic and intercontinental ballistic missiles, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.

A press release from technology giant L3Harris Technologies said that the Space Development Agency [SDA] had carried out a preliminary review of the proposed satellite design. This inspection was carried out on September 20.

“We’ve worked closely with SDA to ensure our design taps proven technology that can scale to address the changing mission,” said L3Harris Space and Airborne Systems President Ed Zoiss in a statement. “We understand the threat and are focused on delivery.”

BulgarianMilitary.com reminds you that two companies have been approved to work on this project. These are L3Harris and Elon Musk’s company SpaceX. At the end of last year, they received permission to design and develop four passengers of this type. $ 342 million was granted, with L3Harris receiving $ 193 million and SpaceX receiving the remaining $ 149 million.

The “hunters” of hypersonic missiles will be a total of eight. They will build the future defensive space architecture of the United States. Their goal is to capture and track the launch of a hypersonic or ballistic missile from anywhere in the world. The satellites will have sensitive infrared sensors for this purpose.

More about the SDA mission

The SDA recognizes that Russia and China have made significant progress in recent years in developing successful and efficient intercontinental ballistic missiles. Russia has mostly implemented several hypersonic missiles, which pose a threat to the United States.

The United States is lagging in developing such technology, but not in the idea of intercepting such missiles. The US infrared defense line is currently in geostationary orbit. This line of defense is made up of only a few satellites flying 22,236 miles above the Earth’s surface.

The SDA’s mission is to build and position hundreds of low-orbit satellites around the earth. They must fly no more than 1,200 miles above the Earth’s surface.

BulgarianMilitary.com reminds you that in August this year the SDA has already launched an experimental satellite for this purpose. It was part of the payload of the Cygnus NG-16 spacecraft. The experimental satellite is called PIRPL. Its sensors will give the SDA a first look at the infrared background noise of the earth’s surface, ocean, and atmosphere at different times of the day and night.

A secret space weapon against China and Russia

Shortly, the Pentagon will announce and demonstrate secret space weapons, Breaking Defense reports, citing its sources. Experts interviewed by the American publication said that in this way the United States would show Russia and China its new anti-satellite development.

The publication claimed that the presentation of the weapon was originally planned to be held at the National Space Symposium event, scheduled for August. The publication writes that preparations for declassification have been carried out over the past months, but the situation around the withdrawal of the American military from Afghanistan has probably changed plans. According to Breaking Defense, only senior US government officials have access to information on classified weapons.

The publication writes that the secret system provides access to disable or destroy a satellite or spacecraft. The publication claims that the United States planned to conduct a real demonstration of the operation of this weapon.

Breaking Defense, citing expert opinions, admits that the unnamed system could use, for example, a mobile ground laser, an electronic jammer, or a microwave cannon. Sources of the publication doubt that any version of the kinetic interceptor will be the secret weapon.
