Satellite revealed the carrier of Russian nuclear ‘monster’ Poseidon
WASHINGTON – For a long time, the international media have been trying to find out whether the latest nuclear torpedo, the Poseidon of the Russian Federation, advertised so heavily personally by Russian President Vladimir Putin, is true or just a rumor. Including, we very often relied solely on Russian sources, who spoke at length about his supposed capabilities.

The full picture was unclear, as it was not known whether Russia was indeed working on special submarines carrying the Poseidon-struck drones, or whether it was Russian propaganda. It turned out, however, that the Russians were indeed building special carrier submarines for this nuclear “monster.”
At the beginning of the year, however, an American satellite managed to capture the built port dock, which was supposed to serve as a starting point for the integration of the Poseidon torpedo. Satellite images show a nuclear submarine located near the pier. In front of the submarine are seen unusually massive channels for firing torpedoes.
US experts suggest that this submarine will be the new carrier of nuclear torpedoes Poseidon. Each carrier submarine will be armed with 6 to 8 Poseidon nuclear torpedo drones.
Analysts of the satellite images also drew attention to another fact – the presence of the ship Academic Alexandrov, which has been reconstructed and has a newly equipped stern, is visible. This will allow the Russians to load the submarine’s torpedo compartments through this ship.
“Satellite images confirm that Poseidon could be stationed on the special-purpose ship Academician Alexandrov [listed in the Navy as a rescue tug, a research ship]. At the same time, it appears that there is a nuclear torpedo or its imitation on board,” USNI News reported.
They say…
A source in the Russian military-industrial complex, quoted by TASS, said the latest Russian underwater drone “Poseidon,” the development of which was announced in March 2018 by Vladimir Putin, will reach a speed of more than 200 km/h [about 110 knots].
“Poseidon” will be capable of operating at a depth of over 1 km and traveling at its maximum speed in the air cavities.
According to the source, the underwater drone will be highly maneuverable during its course. Maximum speed and the possible depth “makes it impossible” for the drone to defeat another enemy drones.
We recall that, at the moment, the modern nuclear submarines have a maximum underwater speed of 60 km/h [30-35 knots] and the torpedo – about 90 km/h. [50 knots]. The Russian torpedo system “Shkval” is equipped with a jet engine that, according to other sources, can reach an underwater speed of 370 km/h [up to 200 knots]. Still, unlike Poseidon, it operates at a shorter distance and a shallow depth.

There is still a risk of hacking
The Russian promising underwater unmanned aerial vehicle “Poseidon,” which in April 2018 in the UK was called the “Doomsday” weapon, has “many advantages” compared to a submarine with a crew on board, the military expert Alexander Zhilin said on August 4 last year.
According to the Russian expert Alexander Zhilin, the Poseidon torpedo “can be constantly on the alert and carry out assigned tasks at any time.” The expert noted that drones of this class “require a lot of responsibility since they are controlling through software.”
According to Zhilin, the potential risks associated with the operation of Poseidon are small. “It is clear that certain risks arise if, conventionally, hackers try to take over control. But after talking with our engineers and designers, I concluded that the protection against external interference is colossal,” the commentator is sure.
Germany: Russian nuclear UUV may deliver warheads in complete silence
German experts believe that the Poseidon nuclear drone is part of Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s ingenious plan to preserve Russia’s great power status. Most of all, in the West, they fear that the words of the President of the Russian Federation about “Poseidon” will turn out to be prophetic.
This opinion states in the publication of the German news agency RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND). The author of the material, Matthias Koch, draws attention to the fact that within the framework of his message to the Federal Assembly, the President of Russia mentioned Poseidon. Vladimir Putin noted that work on a new system of unmanned weapons, which will include the silent delivery of nuclear charges to their destination, is being carried out following the development plan of the Russian army.
The German observer admitted that if earlier in NATO they rejected the danger of “Poseidon”, considering it a ghost, now in the ranks of the Western military horror began to grow about this weapon of Russia. Western sources in military circles claim that the Poseidon underwater drone will autonomously cross entire oceans and destroy coastal cities, provoking giant waves and emitting radioactive energy.
The world thought it was a bluff
The RND pointed out that the first mentions of this Russian armament date back to 2015, when many military experts in the West called Vladimir Putin’s words a bluff, but years later, it became apparent that the Russian leader was not joking – today in Europe and the United States they are forced to admit that they were wrong their position.
“In the West, they are puzzled by one detail that they would like to know urgently: what sound does the Poseidon drive make?”, Stated Matthias Koch.
The author of the publication in this situation is most frightened because if the NATO military cannot find an answer to this question, then Putin’s warning about “Poseidon” will turn out to be prophetic.
“Then Putin will be right in his assertion that Poseidon is an irresistible weapon,” the RND notes.
The German edition called the Poseidon drone “an eerie and mysterious weapon” that could threaten Russia’s opponents with a double strike – through a giant wave and a nuclear charge. The author of the publication with concern concluded that the question remains whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will ever decide to use these weapons.
