US Marines killed after an attack in Kabul, Russia also worried [video]
WASHINGTON – At least 12 US Marines have been killed in a car bomb attack at Kabul International Airport and 15 have been seriously injured, international media reported. The information was confirmed by Lucas Tomlinson and Jennifer Griffin from Fox News.
Confirmation of the killing of US Marines also came from the Pentagon through the official Twitter profile of spokesman John F. Kirby. However, it does not specify the number of Americans killed.
Joe Biden in his Twitter statement about 20 hours ago said that “We’re going to do everything that we can to provide safe evacuation for Americans, our Afghan allies, partners, and Afghans who might be targeted because of their association with the United States.”
The Taliban’s spokesperson, in a tweet, says the “Islamic Emirate strongly condemns the bombing of civilians at Kabul airport, which took place in an area where U.S. forces are responsible for security.”
“The Islamic Emirate [of Afghanistan] is paying close attention to the security and protection of its people, and evil circle will be strictly stopped,” the tweet added.
Baron Hotel in Afghanistan: What we know
Two explosions outside the Kabul airport Thursday injured at least three U.S. Marines and others, as the U.S. attempts to continue its evacuations out of Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Terrorist group ISIS-K is suspected to be responsible for the attacks.
The extent of the injuries and deaths is not yet clear. Pentagon press secretary John Kirby confirmed that there have been U.S. and civilian casualties.
One of the explosions occurred outside the Baron Hotel – but why attack this hotel in addition to such a high-profile target as the Hamid Karzai International Airport?
There are fears of an increase in the terrorist threat to Russia
Alexei Chepa, deputy chairman of the State Duma’s international relations committee, told Interfax that there were fears of an increase in the terrorist threat to Russia amid the explosion at Kabul airport.
“The terrorist attack took place despite the agreements declared by the Americans with the Taliban during the withdrawal of the contingent of troops from Afghanistan. The growing threat of terrorist attacks on the Russian Federation after the explosion in Kabul” Chepa said.
At the same time, Chepa stressed that Russia has never removed this threat from its accounts and has not lost vigilance, given the danger of terrorists entering the territory of the Russian Federation.
“Honestly, we have never removed this suspicion. We have recently conducted exercises in both Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, we understand what the threat may be here, so we will work,” the parliamentarian added.
