Despite Greece’s protest, Turkey will receive its submarine

ATHENS, BM, ($1= 0.85 Euros) – Tensions in the Balkans along the Greece-Turkey axis have not abated for decades. This was also felt by politicians when Greece last month expressed dissatisfaction with Germany over a trade deal to sell a new submarine to the Turkish navy.

Then, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias commented that if Western Europe continues to close its eyes and not take an arms embargo against Turkey, the balance of power in the Aegean Sea will be upset and Turkey will gain its advantage.

Despite calls from Greek politicians, Europe has no plans to impose such an arms embargo for now. Moreover, Turkey will get its German-made submarine, as Germany, Spain, and Italy blocked Greece’s request and voted against a bill banning submarine exports to Turkey.

“I cannot help but express our deep disappointment with the role of the SPD about the proposals for an arms embargo on Turkey. “Both Prime Minister Mitsotakis and I have spoken many times to almost everyone in Germany about the need to keep the balance in the Aegean,” Dendias said on June 16, just a month ago.

Greece accuses Turkey that Ankara is doing everything in its power to destabilize the region and is doing nothing but violating international rules. At the same time, the signals coming from the EU are more about dialogue with Turkey than its isolation.

In recent years, Turkey has continued to suffer criticism from both its NATO partners and economic sanctions from the United States. Most recently, Ankara was forced to turn to another supplier of helicopter engines (Ukraine-ed.) Because the United States promised Turkey that it would not issue an export license for its American engine.

Some countries have already imposed an arms embargo on the Turks, others are openly refusing dialogue with them, as is the case with France, and the still unresolved problems between the two countries over an incident with a French frigate.

Israel openly supports the Greek initiative to oppose and impose arms sanctions against Ankara and has decided to sign a bilateral agreement to ensure that a military partnership with the Greeks will begin for at least a billion and a half dollars.
