NATO ships stay in the Black Sea because of a Bulgarian exercise

SOFIA, BM, ($1=1.65 Bulgarian Levs) – NATO’s Sea Braise exercise is expected to end tomorrow, July 10, after launching on July 28 in Black Sea waters. A very large part of the alliance’s ships, including those of the United States, will remain in the waters of the Black Sea until July 19.

In the period July 11-19, Bulgaria will start conducting its annual Breeze exercise and for this reason, NATO ships will remain to participate in it. This information was confirmed both by the Bulgarian National Radio and by the leader of the exercise Sea Breeze from the American side Stuart Bauman.

“Most of the ships that took part in the Sea Breeze will also take part in the Breeze, the Bulgarian exercise. Therefore, they will remain in the Black Sea for a certain period,” Bauman said at the briefing. “They will not exceed the deadlines provided for in the Montreux Convention,” he added.

The Bulgarian military exercise Breeze will be held on July 11-19, 2021. As it was announced earlier this week by the Bulgarian radio BNR, 14 countries will take part in the exercise. It is planned to use 30 ships, three planes, eight helicopters, and over 2,000 servicemen from Great Britain, the United States, Ukraine, Albania, Belgium, Georgia, Greece, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Romania, and Turkey.

Sea Breeze 2021 is a NATO exercise in Black Sea waters with approximately 4,000 sailors and 40 warships of various types and classes. This year’s exercise involves a flotilla of Ukraine, the United States, Canada, Britain, the Netherlands, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey and Latvia, and others. In addition to warships, Sea Breeze 2021 is part of the training of naval aviation and ground forces, and this year at least 30 units of aircraft and over 100 armored ground armored vehicles are part of it.

During the Sea Breeze 2021 exercise, the Russian Navy and Air Force also conducted exercises related primarily to surveillance and reconnaissance of NATO ships. On July 7, we announced that Russian Su-22 bombers accompanied by Su-30 fighters had conducted patrol flights. Russia did not fail to show “muscle” when, during the same exercise, it decided to test the artillery capabilities of its coastal air defense systems, including the S-400.
