S-500 passes tests with missiles, production is forthcoming
MOSCOW, BM, ($1= 74.22 Russian Rubla) – The new generation S-500 Prometheus air defense system has been successfully tested with anti-aircraft missile launches, said Sergei Babakov, head of the Russian aerospace’s anti-aircraft missile forces.

“Currently, several tests have been conducted with combat launches of anti-aircraft missiles on air targets. All tests have been completed with a positive result,” he said in an interview with the Russian Ministry of Defense newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda.
According to him, the advanced anti-aircraft missile systems S-350 “Vityaz” have begun to enter the armament of anti-aircraft missile forces, and S-500 “Prometheus” is planned to be received.
“The features inherent in the S-500 air defense system, allowing the destruction, in addition to aerodynamic and ballistic targets, hypersonic weapons of all modifications, including in the near space, allow us to say with confidence that there are simply no analogs of this system,” he said.
In April, Russia’s Almaz-Antey announced that work on the new S-500 Prometey air defense system was nearing completion. In December last year, the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Alexei Krivoruchko announced that in 2021 it is planned to complete the tests of the S-500 and its commissioning.
On July 3 last year, Aerospace Commander-in-Chief Sergei Surovikin said the S-500 would be able to destroy satellites and hypersonic weapons with all modifications in near space.
The S-500 is being developed by VKO Almaz-Antey as a new generation of anti-aircraft missile systems, in which it is planned to apply the principle of a separate solution to the problems of destruction of ballistic and aerodynamic targets.

“Interception in the upper atmosphere is real. It is hundreds of kilometers from the Earth. <…> This is a system that solves a whole range of tasks of both air defense and missile defense. Today we are working out the elements of the system with the maximum cost savings allocated for testing,” Sozinov said in an interview with Arkady Mamontov in his YouTube program.
According to the general designer, the S-500 has no analogues in the world and solves a whole range of tasks of both air defense and missile defense. Now the developers are testing the elements of the system with maximum savings on the funds allocated for testing.
“We tried to make a forecast for the next 25 years on the development of aerospace attack weapons and believe that it will be very reliable in terms of the characteristics that a potential adversary can achieve in this period of time. Accordingly, our system must be able to deal with those means which are still missing, but may appear in five, seven or ten years,” Sozinov added.
The main task of the S-500 is to combat the combat equipment of medium-range ballistic missiles (self-intercepting with a launch range of up to 3.5 thousand kilometers) and intercontinental ballistic missiles in the final section of the trajectory, and in certain cases in the middle section.
