Airbus will try to ‘beat’ the F-35 for the Swiss Air Force with surprising move

BERN, BM, ($1= 0.92 Swiss francs) – Switzerland is yet to decide on the new fighters that will build the backbone of the Swiss Air Force for at least the next 30-40 years. The competition includes the European fighter Eurofighter Typhoon of Airbus, F / A-18 Super Hornet of Boeing, Rafale of the French from Dassault, and F35-A Lightning II of Lockheed Martin.

Bern chooses one of these four participants to replace its existing air fleet with the obsolete F / a-18 Hornet. according to political assessments in the country, Lockheed Martin has the advantage of offering very good conditions to the Swiss.

However, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Britain, which produce Airbus’ flagship Eurofighter Typhoon, made a surprise move just hours before Bern made a decision. Airbus is proposing that all Swiss Air Force fighters be assembled in Switzerland, as well as broad political cooperation.

According to the Swiss press, Bern should not only look at the good financial offer of the United States but as a “neutral territory” that should take into account the economic and political benefits of such a purchase. “The economic and political elements are just as important,” said Bernhard Brenner, head of sales at Airbus Defense and Space. According to SonntagsZeitung, if Bern chooses Airbus, hundreds of local suppliers will be involved in the production of Eurofighter Typhoon.

This move by the four manufacturers of the European fighter is already shaking the government in Bern, political scientists say. It is dividing – 50 percent want an American F-35, the rest are firmly behind the European fighter. There is another point in the European proposal – such a deal will warm relations between the EU and Switzerland, which has already rejected the bilateral agreement with the EU.

Bern is expecting to come up with a decision this Wednesday, June 30th. We will find out soon what it will be like, but the question posed by the EU to Switzerland in this way is already difficult to predict the final winner. Experts note that if Switzerland chooses the European fighter, it will receive assistance and partnership in various areas of everyday life – economy, energy, science, environment, transport, cybersecurity, and infrastructure.

So far, the Swiss Ministry of Defense has refused to comment, saying succinctly that it will soon come up with a decision.
