Legendary RPG-7V2 grenade launcher expects next-generation rocket

MOSCOW, BM, ($1= rubles) – The legendary RPG-7V2 grenade launcher, which has served the Russian army faithfully for nearly 60 years and continues to be used in various parts of the world, will receive a major upgrades. The Russians are working on next-generation ammunition, the range of the grenade launcher, and its accuracy. Before TASS, Nikolay Sereda, who successfully manages the design bureau Basalt, gives more information.

In the next 2-3 years, RPG-7B2 will be armed with new missiles, says Sereda. The new missiles will be 30% more efficient. This will lead, according to Wednesday, to a significant increase in the penetration of the missile into the armor of an armored vehicle. Thermobaric effect and fragmentation of the new missiles will be dramatically enhanced, says the expert.

According to Sereda, the entire range of ammunition that RPG-7B2 generally uses will be updated. He claims that the new ammunition will allow the hitting of tanks, helicopters, and manpower of the enemy.

Apart from the striking power of this legendary Russian weapon, which turned the Russo-Afghan war in favor of Afghanistan, its precision and accuracy are also subject to renewal. According to Sereda, his colleagues are developing another optical and drilling device, without specifying in detail. Currently, the RPG-7V2 fires very accurately at a distance of 150 meters, but the Russian expert says that the idea of the improved grenade launcher is to be just as effective at 1 km.

According to sources, the RPG-7V2 can only be operated with its PGO-7V2 / 3 2.7x organic optical sight and does not have the MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny mounting standard. This is not exactly the case, as in Bulgaria improved sightings of the standard PGO-7 are being developed which allow the grenade launcher to receive a sight with the possibility of night vision, such as the product SGO-7VMU / MNV-50 of Opticoelectron. This combination of optical sight and night vision is powering by Image Intensifier Tube – 3rd or 4th generation.

The same company in the last few years has developed its own product for the Russian grenade launchers from the PG-7V, PG-7VL, and PG-7VLT rocket series, which has a magnification of 3x and weighs only 270 grams.

In 2021, RPG-7V2 celebrated 60 years since its official launch, which is historically documented by an order of the Soviet leadership in 1961. Seredov believes that the improvements and new RPG-7V2 missiles will allow the grenade launcher to remain dangerous and effective for at least another 30 years.

RPG-7V2 is one of the reasons why the so-called active defense system integrates into various combat armored vehicles. This is a counter-action system that must change the electromagnetic or acoustic signature of the target and deceive the missile fired at it.
