Putin sees great potential in the Russian nuclear triad
MOSCOW, (BM) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that the capabilities and potential of the Russian Federation’s nuclear forces have been increased. During meetings with the Ministry of Defense, Putin added that 70% of anti-aircraft missile forces and units are armed with new weapons systems.
“Thus, the potential of the nuclear triad has been dramatically enhanced. The Navy’s combat capabilities have been expanded, including through Caliber cruise missile ships. In the aerospace force, more than 70% of anti-aircraft missile regiments have been restored – equipped with modern S-400 systems” Putin said.
Putin is talking about state tests currently being completed on two weapons developments – the hypersonic Zircon missile and the latest S-500 air defense system. According to the Russian president, the S-500 will soon enter service as it “completes state testing.” Zircon is completing its tests and entering production to arm warships and submarines, he said.
According to him, “the latest weapons and military equipment are delivered to the army and navy with high dynamics.”
VKO Almaz-Antey is developing S-500 Prometey as a new generation of anti-aircraft missile systems, which assume the principle of separate solutions to the destruction of ballistic and aerodynamic targets. The S-500 will become the basis of a unified national anti-aircraft system and missile defense (AMD). It will also be able to destroy satellites and hypersonic weapons with all modifications in tight space.
The hypersonic naval missile “Zircon” was developed in the NGO “Reutov” “Mechanical Engineering” (part of the Corporation for Tactical Missile Weapons, KTRV). Designed to arm the Yasen-M and Husky multi-purpose nuclear submarines, as well as surface ships. Earlier, Putin announced that the Zircon missile would be able to hit ground and ground targets at a distance of over 1,000 km at a speed of about Mach 9.
Amid Putin’s remarks, nuclear bombers have been sent to Syria
Most recently, photos appeared on social networks, according to which a pair of Russian Tu-22M3 bombers appeared in the sky over Syria and landed at the Russian airbase there, Khmeimim. This information was confirmed today, May 26 by several media.

Such information is not uncommon, as the Russian aerospace forces have been operating these aircraft for years in the Syrian civil war. But their use so far has been mainly associated with sporadic involvement in specific bombings and their return to Moscow. The need of the Russian Air Force for bombers in the skies over Syria is not palpable, as it is open only to them, and some of the fighters in Kmeimim have repeatedly taken over the functions of the Russian bombers.
The question now is whether Moscow does not plan to secretly deploy Russian bombers at Khmeimim and secure complete control of the skies and the unequivocal support of Russian ground forces.
Another reason why it assumes that Moscow will locate permanent bombers in Syria is Russia’s ability to strengthen its air capabilities in the Mediterranean. In this way, Russia will ensure the provision of greater military power on NATO’s southern flank and strategic control around North Africa.
