Will the U.S. Space Force become digital? At least that’s the desire

WASHINGTON, (BM) – Yes, that is precisely the desire of the U.S. Space Force, according to today’s statement by their leader, General Jay Raymond. The general presented the vision for the future of the U.S. Space Force and clarified that this future embeds in the service’s digital services.

According to General Jay Raymond, the operational activities of this agency operate in a completely different environment. The U.S. Space Force is the smallest unit in the country’s defense but operates in an environment with the potential to transfer big data.

Raymond says the transformation of the digital service is imperative. The general is targeting the operational environment of the service and U.S. competitors at the moment – Russia and China. According to him, Moscow and Beijing are working hard to reach American capabilities in space and come when they rightly begin to deny American superiority there.

“The rapid pace at which American opponents are developing new capabilities requires a new, faster approach than the U.S. military,” Raymond said.

The general’s idea affects four areas

Raymond proposes that the U.S. Space Force’s digital service focus on four primary areas of operational action – engineering, digital workforce, digital exchanges, and digital operations.

“The Space Force is a small, specialized service with an expansive mission. It is inherently more bound to and driven by technology than any other mission set,” said Chief Technology and Innovation Officer Maj. Gen. Kimberly Crider. “We must be committed in turn to providing [Guardians] with the digital age knowledge, tools and processes they can use and enable and empower their peak performance and unlimited potential in advancing how we design, develop, field and operate space capabilities today and into the future.”

A new cloud-based ecosystem is part of the digital engineering that the U.S. Space Force is already working on. This unique ecosystem is needed not only by the military but by the entire U.S. government. The ecosystem will help and ensure the secure exchange of data between institutions or between the military when sharing operations.

According to General Jay Raymond’s plans, the digital workforce will not only provide some access, but it will also have artificial intelligence, which at some point will make specific decisions on its own.

At this stage, Raymond is not committed to the estimated budget of the U.S. Space Force. Budget data will be available later this year, allowing management to assess how far it can go in its ideas.
