Will Turkey annex northern Syria to its territory? There are such signals
PANAGYURISHTE, (BM) – Turkey is fighting its battles in Syria. Officially, Ankara has faced the PKK, a terrorist group in Turkey. But like Russia and the United States, Turkey is beginning to establish a permanent military base in northern Syria.
Like the two great powers globally, Ankara has once again “failed to deal” with terrorists in Syria and is constantly sending troops. It sounds ridiculous, even too frivolous, for a country that claims to be one of the leaders in armaments and has the largest army in Europe for the second year in a row not to stop the “guerrilla” raids of a group of people.
Turkey continues to transfer troops and equipment to Syrian territory actively. Information from field sources claims that an intensified campaign of pro-Turkish factions against the official Syrian youth is currently underway. According to sources, there is talk of persuading and even forcing the local population in northern Syria to support Damascus’s secession.
The time of the “referendums” is once again coming out of the forgotten Russian manipulation of Ukraine years ago. There is talk in northern Syria of preparing for such an action. Moreover, they are convinced that Ankara does not intend to comply with Moscow’s opinion at all, arguing precisely with the “Crimean referendum.”
There is no official information
It should be noted that there is no official information from the Turkish side for the preparation and holding of such “democratic” events. But we must also mention that even if Ankara does not want to, Moscow is more than a firewall for Syria.
And let’s be honest – no matter how much they believe in each other and fight in the chest in a military conflict with Russia, Turkey will be humiliated, chewed, and spit out. Let’s not forget a hidden maxim – you do not play the war with a country that has a nuclear weapon.
But, in international political relations, people’s rights and desires come last. In the first place are the interests achieved by blackmailing and stirring up the cards. A Turkish recognition of “Russian Crimea” could appease the Kremlin’s “master” to turn a blind eye to Aleppo and Idlib.
War in Syria
In February 2020, Turkey lost at least 62 troops killed in Syria. Nearly 100 soldiers were wounded, Syrian-backed forces destroyed dozens of Turkish armored vehicles, and more than ten drones, including drones, were shot down. Washington has repeatedly accused Moscow of involvement in the deaths of Turkish soldiers, Russia rejects these allegations.
In early March, the presidents of Russia and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, agreed that a ceasefire came into force in the Idlib de-escalation zone. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad later said that if the US and Turkish military did not leave the country, Damascus would use power.
The reason for the Russian-Turkish negotiations was a sharp aggravation of the situation in Idlib, where in January, a large-scale offensive by the Syrian army against the positions of the armed opposition and terrorists began.
Government forces recaptured nearly half of the Idlib de-escalation zone and left behind several Turkish observation posts. After that, Ankara sharply increased its military contingent in the region and launched the operation “Spring Shield” to push the Syrian troops. Militants are loyal to Ankara and support Turkey.
