Light at the end of the tunnel for the Turkish Altay tank
ANKARA, (BM) – The Turkish defense industry announced that the local engine’s tests that will power their next-generation Altay tank would begin in April this year. According to Daily Sabah, the engine is currently on a test bench.

Ismail Demir officially confirmed the news. He is the head of the Presidency of the Defense Industry (SSB). BMC is developing the engine for the Turkish tank, Demir said last Sunday. According to preliminary characteristics, 12 V-cylinders, water cooling, turbodiesel drive, 1500 horsepower, and 4600 Nm of torque will move Altay around the battlefields.
Even if the new Turkish engine tests are successful, Ankara will integrate the engine into Altay in the next version. Maybe with the next version of the tank. Until then, there is a possibility that a South-cut engine will drive the first version of Altay. Such news was announced in the media last month. SSB also supports such a statement.
Which South Korean engine will power the first version of the Altay?
Turkey is in talks with South Koreans to supply engines to power the tank. That delivery will happen soon, Ismail Demir, chairman of the defense industry’s (SSB) presidency, told reporters on March 3rd.
Sources from the Turkish Ministry of Defense claim that the alleged South Korean engine is a Doosan Infracore DV27K. This engine is a 4-stroke, 12-cylinder engine with 1500 hp. According to the characteristics of the South Korean manufacturer, the engine is water-cooled.

Batu is the future of the Turkish infantry
Batu is the name of the Turkish engine being developed, which will continue this year and power future Turkish Altay tanks. The Altay project is an initiative of the Turkish government, and the main contractor is Otokar. Turkey and Otokar signed an agreement to develop the tank in 2007. The value of the contract was then about $ 500 million and included four prototypes.
The engine will be diesel with an autonomous gearbox. However, the Turks do not yet have their technology for its development, so they do it together with the Italian manufacturer Fiat / Iveco. The manufacturer of the engine is the Turkish company BMS.
An arms embargo has thwarted Turkish plans
The Altay Turkish tank had long been to be propelled. Ankara expected Altay to receive a Rank transmission and an MTU engine. MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH was a German company that had to provide the Turks with a 1500 hp engine. It got to the point that Rheinmetall joined the project, even setting up a joint venture with the Turkish BMS.
However, negotiations between Turkey and Germany have stalled. Berlin imposed an arms embargo on Ankara, and German companies withdrew from the project. Germany is one of several European countries that have imposed restrictions on military trade with Turkey. The reason for the arms embargo was the participation of the Turks in the civil war in Syria.
