Washington offers Abrams tank in FMS mode to Polish army

WARSAW, (BM) – As part of the market analysis related to the new generation of Wilk tank program in Poland, Abrams tanks were proposed. The result is indirect from the answers sent to Defense24.pl, the Inspectorate of Armaments. One of the market analysis participants in the US military, which almost certainly offers Abrams in FMS mode.

In response to questions from Defence24.pl, Krzysztof Plotek, spokesman for the Arms Inspectorate in May, said that “The analytical and conceptual phase (FA-K) for the task of acquiring new generation tanks under the WILK program has not been completed. (…) The analytical and conceptual stage carried out covers several structures planned to be introduced and existing in the world.’

Major Plotek added that “as part of the market analysis, talks were held with Ośrodek Badawczo-Rozwojowe Urządzeń Mechanicznych” OBRUM “Sp. z o.o., Krauss-Maffei Wegmann Gmbh & Co. KG, represented by Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne S.A. from Poznań, Rheinmetall Defense, represented by Rheinmetall Defense Polska Sp. z o.o., Hyundai Rotem Co., represented by H. Cegielski Poznań S.A., United States Army, BAE Systems Hägglunds AB and General Dynamics European Land Systems.”

A spokesman for the Arms Inspectorate did not specify what decisions were being considered, only mentioning that both existing and future structures were being taken into account. The fact that the talks were conducted alongside the US military, in practice, means that M1 Abrams tanks are also included in the analysis.

They may be proposed in intergovernmental mode (FMS) by US authorities (including modernization, as is the case in Taiwan). Abrams’ successor is still at a very early stage, and its configuration has not been determined. The family M1A2 is and will be upgraded. Market analysis is also present by General Dynamics, a tank manufacturer, and BAE Systems, which offers, among other solutions, widely understood armored equipment, M88 technical support vehicles that work with Abrams.

Abrams is, therefore, the third of the existing projects – after the Leopard 2 tank and the South Korean K2 – to be analyzed in the Wilk program. In this project, which has to choose a successor to the T-72 / PT-91 tanks, thoroughly new solutions are also researched, as confirmed by the IU spokesman.

He also added that “Recommendations on the method of acquiring new tanks will be set out in the FA-K outcome documents, taking into account the results of the assessment of the emergence of a core national security interest (PIBP), if conducted.”. The analytical work in the Wilk program has been carried out since 2017.
