First autonomous Russian interceptor drone completed tests

MOSCOW, (BM) – Tests of a modernized version of the newest Volk-18 [Wolf-18 – ed.] interceptor drone, capable of finding and then shooting down or ramming enemy drones in a fully automatic mode, have come to an end, the Almaz-Antey VKO concern reported.

According to a representative of the concern, the flight tests included the actual destruction of target drones. He also noted that in 2021 the company plans to enter state tests of the drone, RIA Novosti reports.

The Volk-18 did already improve its capabilities. The new, improved version received a new optical-location system, which provides an increased target detection range and a modified control system that allows the drone to be used in a fully automatic mode.

The producer noted that the drone independently performs search, recognition, and selection of targets and maneuvering and destroying drones. The operator now only confirms the decision to attack. The representative of the Almaz-Antey concern added that such a device is the first in Russia.

What the Volk-18 interceptor drone is?

The Volk-18 interceptor drone is a high-speed and maneuverable quadrocopter with a takeoff weight of up to 6 kg and dimensions of 60 by 60 cm. The flight time of an interceptor drone reaches 30 minutes. A working prototype was exhibited in Moscow at the concern’s exposition at the National Exhibition and Forum of Civil Aviation Infrastructure NAIS 2021.

Russia is developing an anti-drone missile

The Instrument Design Bureau has begun developing the world’s first multi-role anti-tank missile system (ATGM), which can shoot down unmanned aerial vehicles, Bekhan Ozdoevl said on February 5th. He is the industrial director of the Rostech weapons complex.

“We started developing new ATGM systems. This system is no longer a highly specialized anti-tank weapon but a multi-purpose defensive assault weapon capable of effectively hitting not only typical targets – tanks or armored vehicles but also a range of previously “unattainable targets” such as air targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles. Ozdoev told RIA Novosti.

The new multifunctional complex missiles are developed combined self-guided warheads, unique for ATGM, with two channels at once – thermal and optical. “The new ammunition will be used on a” shoot and forget “basis,” Ozdoev added.

Russia will also develop new warheads for ATGM missiles

In turn, the “high-precision complexes” note that in parallel, work is being done to improve the technology for the production of warheads for ATGM missiles; in particular, new compositions of explosives are being developed.

To date, neither side has been armed with anti-tank systems that can strike drones. Certain ATGM brands can shoot down large and low-speed air targets with sufficient heat radiation, such as helicopters.
