USS Donald Cook to take part in exercises with Turkish S-400, Moscow claims
MOSCOW, (BM) – Joint military exercises between Turkey and the United States are forthcoming in the coming days. The Russians say USS Donald Cook will participate in them on an equal footing with Russia’s S-400 air defense system, purchased by Turkey last year. Russian journalists expressed this opinion in the Aviapro news agency.
- 10 years later: Russia, China, USA and Japan will hold joint naval exercises
- America is rehearsing secret tactics to attack Russia, Moscow says
- Pentagon is deploying troops in Taiwan for an upcoming large-scale exercise
According to the Russians, the exercise will take place in the middle of this week. The official information is that Ankara is planning new tests of the S-400 system. They will take place in the vicinity of the Turkish city of Sinop. Moscow monitors USS Donald Cook’s actions in the Black Sea and suggests that Turkey and US planning moves to explore the Russian complex’s capabilities.
Military analysts have suggested that the S-400 could “face” American cruise missiles during the exercise. The USS Donald Cook will fire the rocket, they say. However, observers deny such a possibility, as there are no pre-announced areas for identifying and launching the missile.
Military analysts, extreme in their assessments, suggest that if such an exercise occurs between the US warship and the Russian missile system, it will worsen Turkey and Russia’s relations. Especially in the field of military-defense cooperation.
Will Turkey copy the S-400?
More recently, similar allegations have surfaced in the Russian media. The reason why Russians believe in such a possibility is the US refusal to lift sanctions on Turkey over the purchase of the S-400 and Moscow’s refusal to provide technology to develop the S-400 air defense system.
Such a possibility always exists, but it is not clear what the chance is that it will happen. We remind you that China terminated its industrial and military relations with Turkey precisely because Ankara decided to copy Chinese technology some time ago. The question now is whether Turkey will choose to do the same with the Russian S-400.
According to Russian analysts, Turkish military experts expressed such an opinion, who wanted Turkey to start producing anti-aircraft missile systems based on Russian S-400s on its own.
However, Russian analysts say this is impossible. Mostly because the developers of the Russian S-400 have provided for such a possibility, and any unauthorized technical intervention would block the system’s capabilities. Thus, according to Moscow, the Turks will not be able to use the S-400 at all in the future. The Russians confirm that the Turks can copy some technical characteristics, but they will not cause concern in Red Square.
