US and NATO with intelligence missions in the Balkans

BUCHAREST, (BM) – A squadron of MQ-9 Reaper aircraft is launching regular reconnaissance and surveillance missions in the Balkans and the region to support NATO and alliance operations. It is about the deployment of approximately 90 MQ-9 Reaper units in Romania at the Campia Turzii base.

Campia Turzii is known as the 71st Romanian airbase. The US 31st Expeditionary Task Force (Squadron 1) locates at the base, which will have the task with the available drones to provide operational support for flexible combat employment and conduct joint operations with coalition forces on the area.

The 31st Expeditionary Task Force, also known as the MQ-9 Airmen, generally operates outside the United States. They are relocated continuously to different parts of the world. Their primary function is real-time control of unmanned aerial vehicles, starting and returning from various missions.

Military analysts say such a deployment of US troops and their aircraft in Romania is a signal that the United States is planning a permanent establishment in the Balkans. US and Romanian aircraft operators will work together.

What do the operators and their commanders say?

Raphael is a sergeant in the 432nd Squadron to maintain such drones. He believes that his work is a pleasure, as he is not just a machine operator but is involved in the delivery, assembly, and maintenance of an MQ-9 Reaper. Raphael defines himself as a multifunctional soldier – all in one.

Psychologists say such missions build strong partnerships with allies by sharing security responsibilities. When a soldier is in different places, he starts almost everything from scratch, which is a cure for a quiet everyday life.

The opinion of some commanders among the military is similar. Chief Master Sergeant. Larry, a member of the 31st EOG, Det. 1, believes he says his boys are currently making US history because they are the first squadron outside in a foreign country. According to him, this builds patience and understanding in the soldiers, both inside the unit and among their Romanian partners.

MQ-9 Reaper is one of the most popular and used drones in the world. It is in service both in the United States and among dozens of countries, members or non-members of NATO. MQ-9 Reaper is flying at medium altitude. Its main functions are monitoring and supervision.

Due to its functional capabilities, the drone can perform remote multi-mission reconnaissance missions. The drone has sensitive sensors with an extensive range, a communication package, and precision weapons.
