BAGHDAD, (BM) – Late in the evening on December 20, a massive rocket attack took place in the US embassy in Baghdad and Baghdad’s green zone, which, according to sources in the Lebanese news agency Al-Masdar News, caused several explosions in the city, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing the Lebanese agency.

Officially, the missile attack confirms by the press service of the Iraqi Ministry of Defense. In a statement, the Iraqi army did not specify who carried out the missile attack on Baghdad’s green zone but only mentioned the “corpse outside the law.” Such a statement implies the participation of a local faction or unit of the Islamic State. Military analysts do not rule out that it is a terrorist group funded and supported by Iran. The attack had carried out by a district near the capital of Iraq.

The main attack focused on a residential complex, causing car explosions and damage to buildings. So far, there is no official confirmation of any civilian casualties, despite the strength and intensity of the missile attack.

At least three Russian Katyusha missiles have landed near the US embassy in Baghdad, local sources say. These rockets automatically activated the sirens of embassy defense in whose area there are government buildings. There are other foreign missions near the US embassy. According to a local government source, the US air defense system intercepted and destroyed a rocket fired. These facts support the claim of several sources that the missile attack carried out with the Soviet-made Katyusha missile complex was aimed at the US embassy. There is no official information about any injured American citizens or American representatives in the embassy area.

Such an attack is not the first one on the green zone in Baghdad. It houses dozens of government offices and buildings, as well as dozens of foreign missions. In the last few months, Baghdad’s green site has been attacked dozens of times with Russian Katyusha missile systems. Iraqi and foreign security services have not revealed which faction or group was behind the attacks. Despite the intensity of such missile attacks, no casualties have been reported so far.
