US warship violated Russia’s maritime territory. Moscow responded with missile tests

MOSCOW, WASHINGTON, (BM) – An incident with a violation of Russia’s territorial waters took place yesterday, November 24, around 6:00 am, when an American missile destroyer USS John McCain entered two kilometers into Russian territorial news, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Russian online media.

According to Russian media, the US Navy is conducting an exercise in the Sea of Japan. Part of the US Navy force in the area is the USS missile destroyer John McCain. Sources claim that on the morning of November 24, the same American ship entered Peter the Great Bay, which means crossing the Russian border by at least two kilometers. The Russian navy responded to the violation and immediately sent the Russian anti-submarine ship Admiral Vinogradov, who warned the American violator that he would use a weapon if he did not leave the territorial waters of Russia. Logically, the American warship maneuvered and sailed into neutral waters.

The incident was also confirmed by the Lebanese news agency AMN, according to which the US command of the 7th Fleet of the US Navy has issued a statement confirming the presence of USS John McCain at the coordinates, but does not recognize these waters near Vladivostok as part of the Russian sea border. BulgarianMilitary.com also has the official statement of the 7th US Navy, which literally confirms all the published information from the Russian and Lebanese media.

“On Nov. 24 (local time) USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) asserted navigational rights and freedoms in the vicinity of Peter the Great Bay in the Sea of Japan. This freedom of navigation operation (” FONOP “) upheld the rights , freedoms, and lawful uses of the sea recognized in international law by challenging Russia’s excessive maritime claims” the statement of the 7th US Navy said.

Military analysts say the entry of the American warship into Russia’s territorial waters is a kind of provocation to support Washington for Tokyo. Japan and Russia have been embroiled in a long-running dispute over the Kuril Islands, especially four of them in the entire string chain. The dispute arose immediately after the end of World War II, when Soviet special forces landed and landed on it, declaring them Russian territory. They have since been run by the Russian administration.

Experts in the field of military tactics told BulgarianMilitary.com that it is extremely important to note the way in which the Russian navy reacted to the incident. They note that Moscow has made a peaceful solution to the conflict, as they had the right to immediately fire missiles at USS John McCain, but have chosen to send their warship, which through communication warnings and a specific maneuver forced the American violator to sail in neutral waters.

Today, November 25, Russian media write that Moscow reacted to yesterday’s attempt at provocation by the United States and immediately sent its latest frigate, Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov, to the area of the incident, which is currently undergoing state tests before being officially accepted into service in the Russian Federation.

According to information from the Russian daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the Russian frigate conducted missile tests by launching missiles from Uranus missile systems. Sources claim that this exercise is planned, but do not confirm that it is planned in this part of Russia’s maritime territory, which reinforces the claim that Moscow has decided to send an unequivocal message to the next violators of the Russian maritime border. Currently, a dozen Russian warships are stationed in Russia’s territorial waters around Peter the Great Bay as part of the exercise.

However, the question remains as to how the Russian navy allowed access to the Russian sea border in general, as we know that each country monitors not only its territorial waters, but also a few kilometers outside those borders, with the main goal of preventing such entry. Very often, it happens due to incorrectly read coordinates.
