Next-generation Kumano stealth frigate is now part of the Japanese fleet

TOKYO, (BM) – Recently, the Japanese Ministry of Defense has been quite active on Twitter, and thanks to its account on this social network, the world can learn the latest in the Japanese defense and defense industry. It was from a tweet that learned that Japan already has a second frigate, Kumano, which was developed by the Japanese companies Mitsubishi Heavy Industries [MHI] and Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding.

The 30FFM Kumano frigate is a stealth frigate. It is the second of its kind in the Japanese Navy, and according to preliminary information, Japan will acquire at least 22 frigates, which are expected to be delivered in stages by 2032. Deliveries will be two frigates per year. This frigate was known three years ago, when the Japanese government approved the project contractors [MHI and Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding].

The 30FFM frigate Kumano is relatively well equipped and armed. Kumano will defend Japanese waters and the country’s territorial integrity with eight anti-ship missiles, remote weapons systems, a SeaRAM torpedo, and a US-made Mk-41 VLS vertical missile launcher. 127 mm artillery gun model Mk-45 Mod 4 will ensure the safety of the frigate.

Kumano will be powered by a combined diesel-gas propulsion system. This includes a gas turbine from the British company Roll Royce and a diesel engine from MAN. The choice of the two companies was clear in 2018. In total, the entire installation will guarantee the Japanese navy a self-defense frigate speed of at least 30+ knots. Examining in more detail the specifications of the Rolls Royce gas turbine, it becomes clear that in terms of characteristics, this turbine is the most powerful in the world, which is also operated by other countries. The turbine will provide the frigate with more than 40 megawatts of power.

30FFM Kumano is a stealth frigate, as we announced above. Stealth technology is a Japanese development and production by the Japanese company Mitsubishi. Characteristic of this type of frigate is the significantly increased class of automation, which means a smaller epicapge – 90 people. The frigate has a special place for landing and storage of a naval helicopter.

Japanese self-defense fleet has acquired five new ‘submarine hunters’ learned on November 11 through a post on the official Twitter account of the Japanese Navy that the Land of the Rising Sun has not one, but five brand new Japanese-made submarine-hunting aircraft. It is an air Kawasaki P-1 developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Currently, all five new submarine-hunting aircraft are located at the Japanese air base Atsugi.

Unlike many other submarine-hunting aircraft around the world, the Japanese Kawasaki P-1 was developed solely for the purpose for which it is supposed to be used and has no civilian counterpart to this aircraft. The Japanese manufacturer notes in a statement that the P-1 is the real successor to the obsolete P-3C, which is also a type of patrol and reconnaissance aircraft designed to monitor and explore the seas surrounding Japan.

Sources from the Ministry of Defense of Japan say that the new P-1 differs radically from the obsolete P-3C in various characteristics, such as greater operating range, faster flight speed and, accordingly, higher payload, such as all this is combined with the latest technologies in the field of modern military software avionics. All this, according to a number of military experts, will allow the Japanese naval defense forces to carry out even more detailed and longer monitoring of the surrounding seas.

The main purpose of the aircraft, however, is to detect enemy submarines at sea, so the P-1 has the latest technology sensors and radar systems, noting that the radar mounted on the aircraft is of the AESA type, developed by the Japanese company Toshiba. This radar, according to experts, will allow both pilots and ground control 360-degree coverage and infrared scanning.

Regarding the armament of the new submarine-hunting aircraft, the P-1 is armed with various types of torpedoes, depth charges and mines, as well as air-to-surface missiles and other types of bombs. The interesting thing in this case is that the weapon system was developed by the company Smith Aerospace, which system allows simultaneous control and use of different types of ammunition, mounted and loaded on universal large-caliber cartridges. Also, the aircraft is equipped with additional anti-missile radars to ensure the safety of the aircraft in the event of an attack from both the air and the ground.
