Russian and Pakistani special forces in joint anti-terrorist exercises
ISLAMABAD, (BM) – Special forces from Pakistan and special forces from Russia are to be at the fore of changes in the military cooperation of both countries. This month, the next bilateral special forces exercises begin, aimed at exchanging experiences in the field of anti-terrorist and counter-terrorist activities, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Defence24.
The joint Pakistani-Russian Special Forces exercises are to be held in Pakistan. They are symptomatically referred to as “Przyjazn-2020 / Przyjazn-5”, creating in the first place a framework for cooperation between the special forces and Pakistani commandos. However, it cannot be denied that it is also supposed to be an expression of the rapprochement between the two countries, which started in 2016, when the “Friendship” exercises were launched. So far, two editions have been held in Russia, and the current one will be held in Pakistan.
The Pakistani press emphasizes that both Islamabad and Moscow treat them on a long-term basis, primarily seeking to deepen military relations. Regional observers are expected to indicate that this is another signal of an important change in Pakistan’s strategic priorities in the area of defense and security. From the American perspective, both Chinese and Russian, especially when Washington is making louder and louder efforts to increase its own military cooperation with India.
Pakistanis are to share their experiences from special operations conducted in the areas where terrorists from Tehreek e Taliban TTP operate. The existing rich know-how in the field of operations in tribal areas in remote and remote areas, where the Pakistani army may expect hostility towards its actions, will be of particular importance. According to the description, Pakistani representatives are also to present to the Russians their own capabilities for tracking and infiltrating terrorist groups.
The latter, in turn, directly indicates the participation of not only counter-terrorist formations (special forces), but also special services, in the case of Pakistan ISI. One can only wonder if there will be someone from the ISI soldiers who still remembers Pakistani intelligence and subversive activities against Soviet troops in Afghanistan.
Returning, however, to this year’s edition of “Friendship”, it is noted that the Russians are to share their knowledge with Pakistanis on anti-and counter-terrorist activities carried out in Syria against Al-Qaeda, the al-Nusra Front or the so-called Islamic State. According to a communiqué by the Russian Defense Ministry, more than 70 special forces were sent to Pakistan, and probably a group of intelligence agents representing Russia’s military intelligence, which is comprised of a total of 150 Russians. Especially that no special anti-terrorist operations can be carried out without the support of intelligence components, and this does not apply only to the above-mentioned Pakistan and Russia.
Pakistan will probably be represented by commandos from the Special Service Group (SSG) of the Pakistani army, which is one of the country’s most elite military formations. After all, it specializes in direct missions or counter-terrorist activities.
The exercises are to be conducted this year until November 21 at the Pakistani Special Forces Base in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, located in the northern part of the country. Joint parachute jumps and scenarios in the field of HR activities, i.e. hostage rescue from the hands of terrorists, are planned. Thanks to the exchange of opinions and methods of operation, specialists from the special forces and Pakistani special forces are to acquire new skills in combating terrorism.
