Israel to suspend arms supplies to Azerbaijan, Israeli media close to Netanyahu say

TEL AVIV, (BM) – We continue to keep you informed about what is happening not only in the conflict zone – Nagorno-Karabakh, but also in the military-political relations of third countries related in one way or another to the conflict.

Today, some Israeli and Greek media reported that Israel would suspend arms supplies to Azerbaijan, which have a major impact on the future development and outcome of the conflict. According to some Israeli media, the Armenian ambassador to Israel has received verbal assurances from Israeli diplomats that Israel will suspend the supply of its weapons to Baku.

If this promise is kept, it could radically change the direction of the conflict or at least equalize the two forces. We remind you that more or less Azerbaijan has the upper hand at the moment precisely because it is used under the arms protection of Turkey and Israel, using weapons provided by them.

Military and political analysts say the conflict is very important for Baku, as Baku is currently suffering losses from reduced oil revenues, as well as controversy in the country’s ruling elite, with preconditions for a split.

Israeli-made ballistic missile hit a key bridge

According to Russian media and according to a statement by Artsrun Hovhannisyan, a representative of the Armenian Ministry of Defense, the Azerbaijani military has used the Israeli ballistic missile LORA to destroy a key bridge on the Akari River that connects Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

According to preliminary information, this may be the first known case in which the Israeli ballistic missile LORA is used in a real combat situation. The same thing happened tonight (October 2 – ed.) When the Russian S-300 anti-aircraft system was used for the first time in a real combat situation.

The video in this article shows the exact moment of the Israeli missile strike. According to sources in Nagorno-Karabakh, the bridge was successfully destroyed by the Azerbaijani military. There is no information on civilian casualties, but this type of information will become clear only in a few hours.

As early as yesterday (October 1 – ed.) It became clear from several local sources and from a statement by the Armenian Ministry of Defense that Israel has started deliveries of weapons to the Azerbaijani army. This takes the conflict to a whole new level, as it will not be surprising if Russia and Iran do the same in the coming hours, but with regard to Armenia.

As we announced only a few days ago, the Russian side sent three MiG-29 fighters to the Armenian Air Force, which are armed mainly with obsolete Soviet Su-25s and have only four new Su-30s.

The Israeli ballistic missile LORA is a class of long-range attacking missile, and according to its characteristics we are talking about hitting targets up to 400 km. This missile is a quasi-ballistic missile. The missile itself has its own navigation system (GPS) and video cameras for its correct aiming to ensure its accuracy.

An interesting fact is that in 2018, when the Israeli government was discussing whether to implement it at all, Azerbaijan had already bought it.

The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on September 27, active clashes are taking place in the disputed territory. Martial law was introduced in Azerbaijan and Armenia, and mobilization was announced. Both sides reported killed and wounded, including civilians. In Baku, they announced the control of several Karabakh villages and strategic heights. Yerevan also reports about the shelling of the territory of Armenia.

Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been in conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh since February 1988, when the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region announced its withdrawal from the Azerbaijan SSR.

During the armed conflict in 1992-1994, the Azerbaijani side lost control of Nagorno-Karabakh and the seven areas adjacent to it. Since 1992, negotiations have been conducted within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group on a peaceful settlement of the conflict. The group is led by co-chairs – Russia, USA and France.

In 1994, Azerbaijan, Armenia and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, through the mediation of Russia, signed the Bishkek Armistice Protocol. At the same time, military operations did not stop there, which periodically renewed.

The most significant exacerbation of the conflict was the four-day war of 2016. Then hundreds of soldiers on both sides became victims.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during a meeting with the President of Azerbaijan last year, called for a rhetoric that would go against the fundamental principles endorsed by both sides and enshrined in the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act when resolving the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh.

At the same time, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry admitted that much more needs to be done to achieve a long-term political settlement.
