All Russian combat helicopters will launch kamikaze drones
MOSCOW, (BM) – The new modular cluster unit of unguided aircraft missiles (NAR) for Russian combat helicopters will allow shooting, including kamikaze drones. learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Popular Mechanic magazine.
All Russian combat helicopters, which are equipped with a weapons control system (FCS), in the future may receive a new modular cluster unit NAR. A feature of this unit will be the ability to fire the so-called “smart” ammunition.
“The built-in hardware transmits information from the helicopter’s weapon control system to the payload, whether it be guided blast rockets, guided missiles, mini-drones or kamikaze drones. Through it, you can, for example, pump energy into a battery in a drone, send a command to turn it on, start it, and it will fly further to carry out its program,” TASS reports, citing its own source in the Russian military-industrial complex.
The use of such ammunition will be ensured by the B8V10-UV gun unit with K8V10-UV and K8V5-UV modular cassettes, developed by the Zaslon scientific and technical center for the Mi-28NM combat helicopter. Pipes with a caliber of 80 mm can be assembled into modules of 10, 15, 20 or 25 pieces.
As a reminder, work is currently underway on the updated Mi-28NM helicopter, which the military calls the “Super Night Hunter”. The machine is structurally different from its prototype Mi-28N with a unique over-sleeve radar, new engines, a control system, and a modern anti-air defense system. In addition, the “Night Super Hunter” is equipped with more modern and powerful weapons that increase its combat capabilities.
The pilots in the new helicopter are located in tandem, and the machine itself has dual control, which increases its survivability in combat conditions: if necessary, the wounded pilot can be immediately replaced by his partner. The Night Super Hunter received the VK-2500P-01 / PS engine, the industrial production of which was launched at the Klimov plant.
It is equipped with a new modern electronic automatic control system that regulates the parameters of the engine in flight. New design solutions guarantee reliable operation in areas not only with a temperate climate, but also in desert areas with high temperatures, as well as in high mountains. The Mi-28NM is armed with anti-tank guided missiles and a 30mm automatic cannon.
The helicopter can use a long-range missile “Attack”, which is designed to destroy armored vehicles, manpower, long-term firing points, air defense objects and helicopters. “Attack” is capable of penetrating almost a meter thick armor hidden behind reactive armor. Such characteristics will effectively combat the main tanks of a potential enemy. Also, a laser suppression station can be installed on the helicopter, which protects the “Night Hunter” from missiles.
Russia buys a large number of Mi-8 helicopters for its special forces
The Russian military is showing interest in buying a large batch of Mi-8AMTSh-VN military transport helicopters for the Special Operations Forces said Andrey Boginsky, general director of the Russian Helicopters holding on July 31 this year.
Earlier in July, the press service of the Russian Helicopters holding announced the start of flight tests of the Mi-8AMTSh-VN, the first stage of which is scheduled to be completed in November. In the future, two more helicopters will be connected to the flights.
The Mil plant decided to proactively develop a helicopter for the Special Operations Forces in 2017. In May 2018, the development work under the designation “Sapsan” was approved by the Russian Ministry of Defense.
In the summer of 2019, at the Army forum, a contract was signed with the Russian Helicopters holding for the supply of the first ten Mi-8AMTSh-VN troops to the troops. They should be transferred to the military by the end of 2021.
According to Rostec, the Mi-8AMTSh-VN helicopter has increased combat survivability and security, which are provided by an onboard defense system, titanium and Kevlar armor protection and other constructive measures.
Not only the crew and the most important units are protected by armor, but also the landing force in the cargo compartment. Thanks to two sliding doors and additional hatches, the capabilities of the Mi-8AMTSh-VN in terms of landing troops are significantly expanded.
The vehicle is armed with 12.7 mm machine guns. Along with small arms and cannon weapons, unguided missiles and bombs of various calibers, the helicopter can use a complex of guided missile weapons with a surveillance and targeting system, which allows it to fight air and ground targets, destroy enemy firing points and armored vehicles.

For use in the dark, the Mi-8AMTSh-VN is equipped with a gyro-stabilized optoelectronic system, supplemented by a searchlight with an infrared spectrum, dual-band lighting equipment and adapted for the use of night vision goggles.
