India in the race of hypersonic arms. Successful flight of the missile demonstrator [video]
NEW DELHI, (BM) – Indian authorities have officially confirmed the successful testing of the prototype hypersonic rocket, the HSTDV. According to the announcement of the local state agency DRDO, tested on September 7 this year.
The demonstrator achieved Mach 6 speed during its first flight test, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Space24. In addition to its combat purpose, the developed system is also to be used to carry light satellites into orbit around the Earth.
The firing of the nucleus of the Indian hypersonic system took place at 11.03 a.m. from the test site named after Dr. Abdul Kalam’a (on the former Wheeler Island – on the Bay of Bengal off the coast of the state of Orissa).
The hypersonic rocket demonstrator was raised 30 km before it detached from the launch rocket, and then fired the scramjet, a jet engine with a supersonic combustion chamber. The course of the test was supervised by the Military Research and Development Organization – DRDO (Defense Research Development Organization).
Media reports of the successful trial with the prototype of the Indian hypersonic drive were confirmed on the same day on official profiles of public agencies and Indian government representatives on social media.
“India has successfully tested the Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV) in flight, a giant leap forward in native defense technologies and a significant step towards #sashaktbharat and #atmanirbharbharat. ] “- stated in the official DRDO message. “The vehicle fulfilled all the prescribed parameters, including withstanding the temperature of 2.5 thousand. degrees Celsius and maintaining speed parameters ”- declared one of the older representatives of DRDO.
India is the fourth country after the US, Russia and China to have a successful approach to testing hypersonic vehicle technology. According to the PTI agency, the Indian government intends to use the technology, including for low-cost launch of satellites into orbit. Sources at DRDO say scientists will develop an armed hypersonic rocket capable of a cruising speed of 2 km / sec over the next 5 years.
Work on the HSTDV itself, however, had previously been somewhat delayed compared to the announcements regarding the original testing within 2017-2018.
The Scramjet (Supersonic Combustion Ramjet) jet engine is a type of supersonic combustion chamber rocket propulsion capable of generating speeds far exceeding a conventional ramjet. This type of engine is capable of achieving hypersonic speeds in excess of ten times the Mach number.
BrahMos missile family might change the rules of the game, US said
The BrahMos missile family, created by the alliance of Russia and India, might change the rules of the game. This was published on March 25 this year in the American edition of The National Interest.
The columnist for the American publication, Caleb Larson, notes that BrahMos rockets are a product of a Russian-Indian joint venture. To date, the BrahMos program has developed a direct-flow supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from a ship, from the ground, from the air and from a submarine.
When developing a ramjet engine, Russian technologies were used, and the Indian side was responsible for launchers, mission software and inertial navigation systems.
“The ramjet engine is what makes the BrahMos rocket unique in the arsenal of India. He is capable of speeds up to Mach 3-3.5. The high speed of the rocket makes it difficult to intercept,” the observer of the American publication believes.
Caleb Larson notes that while BrahMos is a fast rocket, its successor, BrahMos-II, currently under development, could change the rules of the game. BrahMos-2 is a hypersonic missile that must travel at speeds above 5 Machs.
The observer of the American publication draws the attention of readers to the fact that hypersonic missiles reduce the reaction time of missile defense and give command posts or computers much less time to respond to a threat.
“Hypersonic weapons are very maneuverable. Shooting it down was comparable to firing a bullet with another bullet,” says the publication The National Interest.
BrahMos II is powered by an engine that is somewhat similar to a ram engine, but capable of much greater speeds exceeding 6 Machs. According to Indian media reports, BrahMos-2 should be tested this year, although the start date is constantly being delayed.
Caleb Larson writes that initially India relies on Russian developments, especially those related to engines. Today, New Delhi hopes that in the future most of the components will be produced domestically, regardless of Russian specialists.
