‘Block the sea’: a series of warships with a unique radar will be built in Russia

MOSCOW, (BM) – Far Eastern borders of Russia will be covered by “all-seeing” corvettes. At the end of August, the Ministry of Defense signed a contract for the construction of about a dozen ships of Project 20380, learned BulgarianMilitary.com citing Izvestia.

Although the parameters of the document were not officially announced, Izvestia learned some details. All new corvettes will receive unique ultra-long-range radars: Zaslon radar systems, which will make it possible to detect even subtle air and sea objects at a distance of hundreds of kilometers. According to experts, thanks to such radar systems, ships will be able to independently find and destroy the enemy, without waiting for target designation from the air.

For hundreds of kilometers

Sources in the military department and the military-industrial complex told Izvestia that all corvettes of the new series planned for construction will receive integrated Zaslon radar systems. They are capable of effectively detecting devices made using stealth technology at a distance of 75 km, and simpler targets – at least 300 km away.

Also, according to the interlocutors of the publication, a fundamental decision has now been made to transfer most of the built ships of the project 20380 to strengthen the Navy grouping. in the Pacific Ocean.

The “Barrier” antenna unit is fixed at the base of the mast and looks like a pyramid with a large number of faces. Hidden behind each edge are stationary transceivers that track the movements of various objects. Radar operators can receive on screens an accurate and continuous picture of the air, surface and ground situation in real time. In traditional installations, it is interrupted due to the rotation of the transceiver unit. The complex includes a control room, a command post, posts of high-frequency and radio-technical devices.

“An ordinary radar station sees sea targets only to the horizon,” Admiral Valentin Selivanov, the former chief of the main headquarters of the Navy, told Izvestia. “And a few decades ago, radars were invented, the signal of which bends around the bends of the earth, goes beyond the horizon and returns with information about the target. If we have already reached the point that they have created an over-the-horizon station that can be installed on ships, then this is very good. Corvettes are armed with cruise missiles, and their firing range is much greater than the distance to the horizon. Thanks to the new radar, corvettes will be able to independently detect the enemy, without waiting for any target designation”.

To protect the shores

The project 20380 multipurpose corvette has become the most massive large warship developed in the post-Soviet period. Now the Russian Navy has six of them. “Guarding”, “Smart”, “Boyky” and “Steady” serve in the Baltic Fleet, “Perfect” and “Loud” – in the Pacific. “Zealous” and “Strogiy” are being completed in St. Petersburg: according to the plan, they should become part of the Baltic or Black Sea Fleets, respectively. Two more corvettes – “Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov” and “Razkiy” – will receive the Pacific Fleet over the next two years.

According to Izvestia sources in the military department, last year it was decided to suspend the construction of ships of this project. However, it was then revised. On August 12, during a visit to the Amur Shipyard (ASZ), Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that he had arrived at the enterprise, among other things, in order to understand whether it was capable of launching six more corvettes in eight years.

As a result, a contract was signed at the Army-2020 forum at the end of August to continue construction, Izvestia sources said. The content of the document and the number of ships ordered by the military department were not disclosed. Some of the corvettes that will be laid at the NEA will strengthen the Pacific Fleet, military historian Dmitry Boltenkov believes.

“In Soviet times, a powerful ship group was based on Kamchatka; in 1990, almost all large ships were decommissioned there. It is necessary to strengthen this direction. Now two ships are serving in the Pacific Ocean, two more will be sent there in the next two years. But this is clearly not enough. Modern corvettes must perform a number of tasks there: cover Primorye, defend the Kuril Islands, as well as Kamchatka, where our strategic missile carriers are based”.

The ships of the project 20380 were designed with the latest technology using stealth technology. Their superstructures are made of multilayer composite materials, which seriously reduced the radar signature. The underwater part of the hull received contours that made it possible to reduce water resistance at a speed of about 30 knots by about a quarter. Due to this, the ship became faster by 1.5 – 2 knots.

The corvettes are armed with the Uranus anti-ship missile system with launchers for X-35 missiles with a firing range of up to 260 km, as well as a universal 100-mm artillery mount A-190 with a firing range of 21.3 km and a rate of fire up to 80 rounds per minute. To protect them from air attacks, they will be equipped with the Redut anti-aircraft missile system.

Now it is the most powerful air defense system that is equipped with naval ships. It can simultaneously strike 16 targets at a distance of 400 km. Its tactical and technical characteristics may be in demand not only by the fleet. “Redoubt” will allow to cover coastal cities, naval bases or especially important areas with an “anti-aircraft umbrella”.

The new corvettes are equipped with an automatic control system (ACS), which allows transferring any data from one ship to another in real time. ACS can intelligently distribute targets between several floating craft, ensuring that the same ship, aircraft or cruise missile will not be attacked twice unnecessarily.
