Russian military has declassified the latest attack UAV ‘Thunder’

MOSCOW, (BM) – The Russian high-tech company “Kronshtadt” has begun to develop a promising attack drone “Thunder”, learned BulgarianMilitary.com. The project will be presented at the military-technical forum “Army-2020”, which will be held in the city of Kubinka, Moscow region from 23 to 29 August.

According to materials published on the forum’s website, the unmanned aerial vehicle will be the wingman in conjunction with the manned attack aircraft. “Thunder” is designed to detect and destroy enemy air defense systems, hitting surface targets and ground targets in depth with high-precision weapons, as well as to perform reconnaissance operations.

The drone is 13.8 meters long, 3.8 meters high and has a wingspan of 10 meters. It is assumed that the device will have a take-off weight of up to 7 tons and can carry a load weighing up to 2 tons. Other characteristics of “Thunder” are still unknown, as well as the fact that the developers are planning to show at the forum “Army-2020”.

At the moment, Russia is also developing a heavy attack unmanned vehicle S-70 “Okhotnik”, which is being created by the “Sukhoi” holding. Its main task is to escort the Su-57 fighter and execute the pilot’s commands. If we compare the known characteristics of these two drones, then the “Thunder” is inferior to the “Hunter” in size.

Russia will also present an unmanned helicopter at the same exhibition

A Russian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of a helicopter type, designed for search and rescue operations, will be demonstrated at the international military-technical forum “Army-2020”. This was reported to TASS by the press service of the Radar mms company, which is the developer and manufacturer of the UAV.

“The enterprise will present for the first time at Army-2020 a multipurpose complex based on a helicopter-type unmanned aviation system,” the company said. As emphasized in “Radar mms”, the complex was developed for the Search and Rescue Service (PSS) of the Ministry of Emergencies of St. Petersburg. “In 2019, the complex was transferred to the PSS, as part of which it takes part in search and rescue operations,” the company added.

“This drone is a completely domestic product and the only helicopter-type UAV in Russia that has successfully passed tests with various loads in a vertical wind tunnel at TsAGI named after N. Ye. Zhukovsky,” added to Radar mms.

The multipurpose complex consists of a helicopter-type UAV and a ground mobile control station based on a Ford Transit minibus. The unmanned helicopter, which is part of the complex, has a mass of 45 kg and can fly at an altitude of up to 1,500 m for 2 hours.

Depending on the tasks set, the device is equipped with a different target load – a small-sized multispectral camera, a gamma-radiation dosimeter, sound broadcasting equipment, a searchlight, a container, a magnetometric system and a small-sized radar. Special drone control software allows you to form a flight route taking into account a three-dimensional terrain model.
