Japan received the second Bell/Boeing MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor

As we reported in July the Japanese military forces received first Bell MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor in the same base.

Japanese tiltroplanes were produced in a configuration with a communication system made according to customer requirements. The aircraft fuselage is corrosion resistant, which reduces maintenance costs. Over the past month, the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces have been trained with the United States Marine Corps to learn how to use the first MV-22B before delivery.

Japan became the first foreign country to supply Osprey tiltroplanes. In total, Tokyo ordered 17 such combat vehicles. The devices enter service with the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces. Several units are expected to be placed on board the upgraded Izumo-class helicopter carriers.

The MV-22B Osprey convertiplanes should expand the capabilities of the Japan Self-Defense Forces to conduct amphibious operations, support humanitarian and disaster relief missions, ensure national defense and regional security, and increase the level of interaction with the US military.

Convertoplanes can change the direction of their propellers from vertical to horizontal and, depending on this, fly like a helicopter or an airplane. The Osprey is capable of transporting 24 to 32 armed men over a distance of 1,600 km at a cruising speed of over 440 km / h. They are armed with machine guns and a small-caliber six-barreled cannon.

In June, Bell/Boeing delivered its 400th unit of Osprey V-22 tiltrotor

As we reported in June, according to Boeing, the Bell / Boeing consortium delivered the 400th Osprey V-22 tiltrotor to the customer.

They became CV-22, transferred to the command of special operations of the US Air Force.

The first V-22 was delivered to the customer on May 24, 1999. Currently, purchases and deliveries are carried out as part of the third long-term contract for the supply of convertiplanes, the cost of which has currently increased to $ 5 billion. The contract is valid until 2024 and includes options for the supply of convertibles V-22 KMP, Air Force and US Navy, and also the first foreign customer – Japan.

As we reported, the first long-term contract for the supply of V-22 convertiplanes for the period 2008-2012 fiscal year It was signed in 2008 and provided for the production of 174 aircraft. Its value amounted to 10.4 billion dollars. The second long-term agreement worth 6.5 billion dollars was concluded in 2013.

On June 29, 2018, the US Navy entered into a third long-term contract with the Bell / Boeing consortium for the production and supply of 58 Osprey V-22 convertiplanes for the US and Japanese aircraft. Its value amounted to $ 4.191 billion.

The agreement provided for the supply of 39 units of the CMV-22B version for the US Navy, 14 units of the MV-22B version for the US Navy, one CV-22B unit for the US Air Force and 4 units of the MV-22B version as part of the ” Foreign Military Sales “for the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. The agreement contained options for the supply of additional devices, some of which were implemented during 2018-2020.
